Landscape Between Hills and Plain

Camporeale lies at an altitude of about 440 m at the foot of the Cozzo di Cipolla, Cresta di S. Cosimo and Spezzapignatte hills. Spezzapignatte is listed at an altitude of 610 m; the hills rise above the Mandrianova plain. From the landscape around Camporeale, views stretch across hills, mountains and plains as far as Corleone, Campofiorito, Roccamena, Bisacquino, Contessa Entellina, Gibellina and Salemi. Two altitude figures are relevant for orientation: Camporeale lies at about 440 m, while the Camporeale wine-growing area is in hilly terrain between 300 and 600 m. It belongs to the Monreale DOC in the province of Palermo and is considered part of the heart of western Sicily.

This connects the town’s location with a larger, also hilly wine-growing area. The altitudes given refer to different areas: Camporeale itself and the wine-growing area. The views also extend in more than one direction, encompassing hills, mountains and plains, as well as several nearby towns. This gives you two concrete points to consider when choosing your destination: the landscape and the wine region.

Wine Production and Tastings

Alessandro di Camporeale offers a guided wine tour of its estate. The tour covers vineyards, the cellar and tastings. Wine enthusiasts can also choose from three distinct package formats at Tenuta Rapitalà, which can be readily compared by their itineraries and food offerings.

“Passeggiata in Tenuta” combines a walk between the rows of vines with a guided cellar tour and a tasting of four wines. “Merenda Siciliana” includes a guided tour of the cellar and surrounding vineyards, four wines, typical antipasti and coffee. “Dejeuner nel Baglio” takes a different approach, with five wines, including three from the Gioiello di eleganza range, and lunch at the Baglio. The meal includes antipasto, a main course, fruit, dessert and coffee. While the walk between the rows of vines is part of the “Passeggiata in Tenuta” package, the other two formats list additional food. Lunch is explicitly included in “Dejeuner nel Baglio.” If you are considering one of these formats when planning your trip, check in advance whether it is offered on your travel dates.

Local Flavours and Culture

Camporeale Days also combines wine with local specialities: the tastings are accompanied by gastronomic specialities and typical products from the area. Its eleventh edition was held as a celebration of the area and its variety of flavours. If Camporeale Days is of interest during your stay, check the specific event dates before making plans.

The Museo del Palazzo del Principe in Camporeale is dedicated to art and the local area and is part of the anthropological Itinerario of the Rete Museale e Naturale Belicina. The Chiesa Madre dates back to 1779. It houses a crucifix attributed to Frà Umile di Petraia and a Madonna by Bagnasco. Thus, the church’s construction date and the works of art housed there are both central to its description.

Another religious site is the Santuario della Madonna dei Peccatori, located on a hill above the town centre. It was built in 1920; the Madonna is venerated there under the title “Refuge of Sinners.” Unlike the Chiesa Madre, the Santuario is characterised by its location above the town centre, its year of construction and its Marian title. This makes it easy to distinguish Camporeale’s different cultural features: a museum focused on art and the local area, a church housing works of art, and a sanctuary with its own tradition of veneration.
