Gibilmanna: Sanctuary, Museum and Trails
Accommodation in Gibilmanna
Gibilmanna combines religious heritage with hiking trails. The Santuario Maria SS. di Gibilmanna lies at an altitude of about 800 metres on the slopes of Pizzo Sant’Angelo. This gives you two specific areas to focus on when planning your trip: the cultural history of the church, monastery and collections, and the Via dei Frati and Trail 603.
Sanctuary, Monastery and Art History
The Santuario Maria Santissima di Gibilmanna is a three-aisled church with side chapels. Its present-day structure probably incorporates the original Benedictine church. The Capuchin monastery, Convento dei Frati Minori Cappuccini di Gibilmanna, was founded in 1535 by Father Sebastiano da Gratteri. The church’s architecture and the monastery’s history are therefore distinct aspects of the site’s religious heritage.
The sanctuary’s artworks include a marble statue of Mary with the infant Jesus. It is attributed to Antonello Gagini and dated to the 16th century. During a restoration in 2014–2015, an older image of Mary Odigitria was uncovered at Gibilmanna beneath a so-called Byzantine icon. The Capuchin catacombs date from the 17th century. Dedicated to the hermit Giuliano de Placia, they occupy the basement of the Madonna Chapel and part of the church.
The Feast of Our Lady of Gibilmanna also has a documented history: from 1970, it was held on the first Sunday in September. This date adds a local religious tradition to the history of the art and monastery.
Museum and Collections
The Museo Fra Giammaria da Tusa is housed in the restored former stable of the monastery attached to the Santuario Maria Santissima di Gibilmanna. It is divided into ten rooms, each named after a friar. Visitors therefore encounter the collection in an arrangement that assigns a name and a room to each friar.
The collections include Franciscan artefacts, valuable sacred vestments and furnishings, objects donated as acts of devotion, and items from other cultures. Experts describe a handcrafted organ with reed pipes dating from the 17th century as a unique example in Europe. The library of the Capuchin friars preserves incunabula, books from the 16th century, and volumes from the 17th and 18th centuries. Artworks, everyday objects and books thus offer different ways to explore the religious and cultural history.
The name Gibilmanna also points to a local tradition: it derives from manna harvested from the nearby ash forests.
Trails and Landscape
Trail 603, the Sentiero Ferla – Bivio Pianetti, starts in the equipped Pianetti area near Pizzo S. Angelo. The Santuario di Gibilmanna is 200 metres before the trailhead. The route is 7 kilometres and 243 metres long and offers views over a valley of forests, cultivated fields and artificial lakes. This trail description gives you both a specific starting point and details about the distance and landscape for planning your walk.
The Via dei Frati offers a different perspective. Stage 8 runs through Castelbuono, Isnello, the Santuario Gibilmanna and Cefalù. From the sanctuary, the Via dei Frati continues to the Sentiero Salvabosco; after a mountain section, it descends towards Cefalù. Check the current condition of the trails before setting out.
The two trail descriptions address different planning needs: Trail 603 focuses on distance, starting point and views, while Stage 8 places Gibilmanna on a route that passes through several named locations.
