Explore Carini through its historic churches, archaeological remains and geological features. Its attractions range from works of art in religious buildings to an early Christian catacomb and protected cave landscapes. When planning your trip, you can choose different areas of focus rather than viewing the sights as a single list.

Churches, Art and Architectural History

The Chiesa Madre was built at the end of the 15th century. The church houses Alessandro Allori’s painting “Adorazione dei Pastori” from 1575. There are also stucco works attributed to the school of Giacomo Serpotta, as well as a painting of the Madonna del Monserrato from the late 16th century by an unknown artist. The date of construction, named work and attributions offer different ways to explore the church’s furnishings.

The Chiesa degli Agonizzanti is also distinguished by its artworks: its rich stucco decoration featuring putti is attributed to the school of the Serpotta family. Frescoes depict scenes from the life of Mary and are attributed to Filippo Tancredi, and in some cases also to Filippo Randazzo. Visitors to the two churches will encounter different types of works—stucco and frescoes as well as paintings—and should keep the respective attributions distinct.

The Chiesa del SS. Rosario was built between 1566 and 1570 with the support of Gilberto La Grua Talamanca. The religious building is described as Sicilian and late Renaissance in style; Baroque additions and valuable decorations were added later. Among the works mentioned is a painting of San Domenico in Soriano from 1684 by Francesco Camaro. This architectural and artistic history can be distinguished from the later alterations without conflating the different periods.

The Baglio di Carini offers another historical perspective. In the 13th century, it served as an operational center for local tuna fishing and agricultural activities in the surrounding area. In the 16th century, it was transformed into a defensive fortress with a watchtower. This sequence reveals two distinct functions: fishing and agricultural operations on the one hand, and the later defensive structure on the other.

Catacomb and Archaeological Finds

The early Christian Catacomb of Villagrazia di Carini is an underground complex dating from the 4th century AD. Its galleries include cubicula decorated with frescoes. The Museo della Catacomba preserves finds from the early Christian cemetery as well as from the late antique and early medieval settlement of San Nicola. The catacomb, cemetery and settlement thus point to different aspects of the site’s history.

The Mosaico Galati is also part of this archaeological context: it adorned the reception hall of a wealthy domus in the late Roman settlement of Contrada San Nicola. As of January 22, 2026, the Mosaico Galati was on display alongside mosaic fragment N.I.47275 in an exhibition pavilion in the former cloister of San Rocco. At that time, advance booking was required; visiting hours were Monday to Thursday from 3 to 7 pm and Sunday from 9 am to 12 pm. Check before your trip whether this arrangement is still in effect.

Caves and Geological Features

The Riserva Naturale Integrale Grotta dei Puntali is a protected area in Mesozoic limestone on the slopes of Monte Pecoraro. The Grotta di Carburangeli offers a different geological and biological perspective: it has been recognized as a geosite since 2017, extends underground for about 400 metres and runs horizontally. Water filtration formed stalactites and stalagmites there. The cave is also home to bats from the Vespertilionidae and Rhinolophidae families.

On September 7, 2023, Carini’s monumental tourist route included QR-code signs and the Flico Official app; descriptions and podcasts were available in Italian and English through the app. Check in advance whether the app is available.

Getting Around and Planning Your Visit

The interactive “Carini città parlante” route runs from Castello La Grua Talamanca to the prehistoric caves and provides information about the monuments along the way. The accompanying web app offers audio guides, texts and videos in Italian, English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese. Guided virtual tours in a 360-degree virtual room enable people with mobility impairments to explore the monuments virtually; this describes the digital offering, not access to the sites in person.

Visits on the Circuito del Sacro are conducted by specialized staff, including art historians, architects, archaeologists and students. As of November 10, 2025, Castello La Grua Talamanca was open daily from 9 am to 1 pm and from 3 to 6 pm. Check the hours before your visit. Dates attached to details like these help you plan visits to individual sites without assuming they will be open on your travel dates.
