These themes span different eras and offer concrete points of reference for planning your trip. For museum visits, an up-to-date access notice is also important.

From prehistory to Roman Sardinia

The Ponte Romano was built around 2,000 years ago and still stands today on seven imposing arches above the Riu Mannu River. Its age, arches, and connection to the river make the structure a distinct historical highlight. The approximate date can be distinguished from the precisely stated number of arches: it conveys the bridge’s long history, while the arches describe its surviving form.

The Su Crucifissu Mannu necropolis takes you further back in time. To date, 22 tombs have been discovered there. Their construction began in the Late Neolithic, dated to 3200–2800 BC; they remained in use until the Early Bronze Age, around the 16th century BC. The period of construction and the later use therefore refer to different periods. Compared with the Roman history of the Ponte Romano and Turris Libisonis, the necropolis offers a much earlier view of the region’s past.

Turris Libisonis is an archaeological park and museum, and is considered one of the best-preserved, most prominent, and most fascinating examples of Roman Sardinia. The collection at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Antiquarium Turritano expands on this theme, exploring Sardinia’s connections with the central and western Mediterranean and the Aegean. An official notice reported that the museum and archaeological site would temporarily close from 2 May 2026 for renovation and accessibility works. Check current access information before planning a visit, so you can take the museum into account when organizing your trip.

Religious buildings and the memory of the port

The Basilica di San Gavino is Sardinia’s largest Romanesque monument. The Sanctuary of San Gavino a mare, also known as the Church of Balai vicino, was built in the mid-19th century. The two buildings thus represent different eras of religious architecture: one is the island’s largest Romanesque monument, while the other is a sanctuary dating from the mid-19th century. This comparison of periods offers a different perspective from the archaeological sites.

The Museo del Porto preserves the memory of how Porto Torres changed as its port developed. The town’s history therefore includes not only prehistoric and Roman remains, but also the changes associated with the development of the port. When organizing your trip by theme, you can distinguish this focus from the religious buildings and archaeology.

Coast and connection to Asinara

Balai is a small bay sheltered by limestone cliffs, with golden sand and crystal-clear water. The cycle path offers a different way to explore the coast: it connects Balai Beach with the coastal area of Porto Torres and continues as far as Balai Lontano. The bay’s distinctive landscape and this named coastal route thus offer two different points of interest.

The public ferry service operated by Compagnia di Navigazione Delcomar connects Porto Torres with Cala Reale on Asinara from the Dogana-Segni pier. Timetables vary seasonally, so check the appropriate schedule before your trip. The ferry connection can therefore be treated as a separate planning item, distinct from Porto Torres’ archaeological and coastal attractions.

This gives you a clear way to compare the options when choosing a focus for your trip: the necropolis takes you back to prehistory, the Ponte Romano and Turris Libisonis represent Roman Sardinia, while Balai combines coastal scenery and a cycle path. If Asinara is part of your plans, add the seasonal timetable to your list. For a culture-focused stay, also take the temporary closure of the Antiquarium Turritano and the archaeological site into account before finalizing your visit.
