Martis offers visitors a range of points of interest: a Romanesque church, a church with Italian Gothic features, museums and cultural events, and a landscape of deeply cut valleys. These themes can be considered separately when choosing a destination. Religious buildings represent architectural history, museums showcase art and agro-pastoral culture, while the valleys define the character of the landscape.

Churches and architectural styles

The Chiesa di San Leonardo is one of the smallest Romanesque churches in Sardinia. The Chiesa di San Pantaleo offers a different perspective on architectural history. It is considered the most complete and coherent example of the Italian Gothic style introduced to Sardinia before the Aragonese conquest, before the Gothic-Catalan style became widespread there. Its architectural layout is also distinctive: the church has three naves separated by pillars, cross-ribbed vaults and a large rose window aligned with the portal. This makes it possible to understand San Pantaleo both in terms of its place in the history of architectural styles and its specific architectural features. San Leonardo provides a point of comparison: its classification as one of Sardinia’s smallest Romanesque churches. Those interested in religious architecture will therefore find two distinct perspectives, rather than interchangeable descriptions of churches.

Museums and culture

The Museo S. Pantaleo is located in the presbytery of the 17th-century Chiesa di San Giovanni. Despite the similar name, the museum is housed in San Giovanni, not in the Chiesa di San Pantaleo. The museum contains the painting “Miracolo di San Pantaleo” by Andrea Lusso, dating from 1595. An exhibition on agro-pastoral civilization is on the ground floor of Casa Puliga-Dettori. The Ethno’s Festival Letterario offers other cultural formats, including literary presentations, meetings with authors, creative workshops, musical readings and theatrical events. The Museo Paleobotanico serves as an information point for the festival and as a venue for temporary exhibitions. The cultural offering thus encompasses historical art and an agro-pastoral exhibition, as well as literature and stage performances.

Townscape and landscape

The historic centre of Martis preserves examples of civic architecture featuring moulded cornices, wrought-iron balconies, monumental portals and traditional rooftop terraces. These details give the town’s description a distinctive architectural dimension beyond its religious buildings. The area around Martis has deep valleys cut into volcanic and sedimentary rock. Access to the Cascata di Triulintas is marked by the signposted “sentiero storico-ambientale mulino Triulintas” trail. The geological formation of the valleys and a named route to the Cascata are therefore two distinct points of interest. Traditional costumes made of white and black fabrics are also part of Martis’s traditional identity. Architectural heritage, landscape and clothing thus stand alongside one another as distinct themes in the town’s description.
