Marina Di Sorso: Beach, Dunes and Pine Forest
Accommodation in Marina Di Sorso
Marina di Sorso combines an extensive sandy beach with dunes, pine forest and various ways to experience the coast on foot, by bicycle, through water sports or fishing. The seven-kilometre sandy beach continues Platamona’s very long coastal stretch. Both the beach’s length and its place within an extensive coastline are therefore important to understanding the destination. The landscape and activities add to this coastal perspective.
Sandy Beach, Dunes and Pine Forest
The sandy beach is dotted with rare sea lilies and surrounded by Mediterranean maquis. Behind Marina di Sorso’s extensive dune system lies a pine forest planted in the 1950s. Numerous other endemic plant species and centuries-old junipers of the species Juniperus phoenicea and Juniperus oxicedrus grow there. Endemic refers to plant species whose natural range is limited to a specific area. The features also differ in age: the pine forest was planted in the 1950s, while the junipers are centuries old.
Water Sports and Fishing
Marina di Sorso is known for surfcasting. The fish-rich Gulf of Asinara makes this type of fishing particularly suitable; fish species found there include gilthead seabream, amberjack, mullet and sea bass. Marina di Sorso is also suitable for kitesurfing and windsurfing all year round. There are different considerations when choosing an activity: surfcasting connects the coast with fishing in the gulf, while kitesurfing and windsurfing offer year-round options at the marina.
Walking and Cycling Routes
There are different points of reference for exploring on foot and by bicycle. The “In bici sul Litorale” route lets you cover a long stretch of coastline by bicycle or on foot. The “Cammino di Santu Jacu” leads to the large square at Marina di Sorso. Its section through Sorso is about 25 kilometres long and can also easily be covered on foot or by bicycle. The routes differ in their focus: “In bici sul Litorale” centres on the long stretch of coast, while the Cammino is defined by the approximate length of its section through Sorso. This length helps you gauge the stage; you can also choose between walking and cycling.
Getting Your Bearings Along the Coast
State Road 200 runs alongside the coastline. Several turn-offs to the shore, known as “pettini”, lead from the road to the water; the third leads to the marina’s large car park. A cycle path runs along the provincial road on the Sorso–Marina di Sorso section. The distinction is important for finding your way: the turn-offs from the state road lead to the shore, while the cycle path information refers to the Sorso–Marina di Sorso section along the provincial road.
