Chiaramonti combines medieval architectural history with archaeological evidence and distinctive landscapes. If you are looking for a hotel in Chiaramonti, the themes of your stay can help you find your bearings: Would you like to focus mainly on the history of the castle and churches, learn about archaeological building forms, or explore the area’s natural features? The various sights offer specific points of interest, though they do not all have the same character.

From Castello dei Doria to the Parish Church of San Matteo

Castello dei Doria was built around the 13th century and formed part of a defensive line protecting the Doria family’s possessions in Anglona. Originally, the complex consisted of a square tower within a fortified wall. The rest of the surviving complex was later converted into a church during the Aragonese period. Around 1500, the former fortress became the parish church of San Matteo and was dedicated to this saint. Chiesa di San Matteo is the parish church in the Chiaramonti area.

The site thus reveals a sequence of different functions: the fortification was followed by religious use. Those interested in history will find not only an approximate date of construction here, but also a specific connection to the defence of the Doria family’s possessions and the complex’s later conversion.

Churches and Archaeological Evidence

Santa Maria Maddalena is a medieval church notable for its two-tone construction. It was originally built in the 13th century as a single-nave basilica and was extended with two side chapels in 1323. These details distinguish the original floor plan from a later structural addition: the extension added two chapels at the sides of the single nave.

The archaeological sites also display different building forms. Nuraghe Ruiu is a single-shell nuraghe with two chambers, one above the other. The megalithic wall of Punta Corrales is in the Su Sassu area, about 1.7 kilometres from the town of Chiaramonti. The wall of Punta S’Arroccu is about five kilometres from Punta Corrales and is also attributed to the Monte Claro culture. The two walls can therefore be understood in terms of their approximate distance from each other and their shared cultural attribution.

Tomb 1 at the Domus de janas di Su Murrone necropolis has a large monumental atrium and an entrance framed by a relief. A substantial collection of ex-votos is displayed on the interior walls of the building in Santa Giusta. The singing tradition also has a specific expression: a form of singing continues in Chiaramonti today as a poetic-musical competition called sa gara.

Landscape and Natural Features

The Altopiano de su Sassu is an area of great natural and scenic value in Chiaramonti. Its documented vegetation includes extensive stands of mastic, rockrose and asphodel, as well as impressive oaks and holm oaks; wildlife also contributes to its natural character. The high plateau complements the historical and archaeological themes with a landscape perspective.

Other natural features include Istrampu Moronzanos and Istrampu de Chirralza. Istrampu Moronzanos is a waterfall about seven metres high that forms a natural pool in a trachyte gorge. Istrampu de Chirralza consists of natural waterfalls fed by the Riu Filighesos and its small tributaries. The descriptions clearly distinguish between a single waterfall with a pool and a series of natural waterfalls supplied by their watercourses.
