Castelsardo lies on a headland extending into the sea, in the centre of the Gulf of Asinara. Ancient fortifications, sacred art, basket-weaving tradition and coastal landscapes shape the themes around which you can plan your trip. If you’re looking for a hotel in Castelsardo, it helps to set an initial priority: would you mainly like to explore architecture and art, enjoy the views, or plan a road trip?

Fortress, Craft and Art

The Museo dell’Intreccio Mediterraneo is housed in the Doria Fortress and extends across nine rooms on two floors. The basket-weaving tradition is also part of Castelsardo’s cultural identity: it continues to be documented and passed down by women basket weavers. In the streets, they weave dwarf palm, seagrass and raffia. Here, you’ll find both a museum with a clearly structured layout and a craft practice that continues to thrive in the town.

Castello dei Doria formed the heart of an extensive defensive system of walls, bastions and towers. A medieval walkway connecting the castle to the former Monastery of San Martino has been restored. The panoramic terraces of Castello dei Doria offer views across the entire Gulf of Asinara; on particularly clear days, the view also reaches Corsica.

The Cathedral of Sant’Antonio Abate occupies a spectacular position on a steep slope above the gulf. Its crypts have been converted into exhibition spaces. A highlight in the Ampuriense Museum is an altarpiece depicting musical angels. It is attributed to the so-called “Maestro di Castelsardo” and dates from the late 15th century. The cautious attribution and dating give the work its own art-historical context without presenting the artist’s name as certain.

Garden Views and Coastal Landscapes

The Giardino Spalti Manganella is accessible from Via Spalti Manganella through three entrances. From there, you can enjoy views of the sea and the old village, and especially of the cathedral that dominates the rock. For your visit, the street named above provides a clear point of reference; as access conditions may change, check the current arrangements in advance.

The coastline also offers a variety of landscapes. High red trachyte cliffs define the shore, while Marina di Castelsardo is among the sandy coastal stretches at the village entrance. Windsurfing and sailing are recommended at Punta La Capra, where the sea and rocks form a natural basin. If you include these activities in your plans, check local conditions, as a recommendation does not guarantee specific conditions.

Ritual, Archaeology and Road Trip

The Lunissanti ritual takes place on the Monday after Palm Sunday. At night, the town centre is illuminated by torches and filled with the sound of church choirs. If you’re planning your trip around the ritual, check the date for your chosen year. This makes it quite different from a road trip, whose schedule can be planned independently.

The Roccia dell’Elefante adds an archaeological highlight: it contains two Domus de Janas tombs from the Late Neolithic, dated to around 3200–2800 BC.

Another option is the route “Da Porto Torres a Castelsardo: l’incanto del Golfo dell’Asinara”. It is designed as an easy two-day road trip with two stages. This offers a different way to plan than visiting individual cultural sites or focusing on the Lunissanti ritual: here, driving time and stages take centre stage. When choosing your hotel, you can first decide whether your trip will mainly focus on culture, the coast or a road trip.
