Oristano: Sartiglia, Museums and Coast
Accommodation in Oristano
Oristano offers several starting points for planning your trip: Sa Sartiglia showcases a lively Carnival tradition, museums and historic buildings tell stories of different eras, and a stretch of sandy coastline lies near Torre Grande. Consider which focus matters most to you. The dates of Sartiglia fall during Carnival; collections, churches and fortifications offer other ways to shape your stay.
Sa Sartiglia: Carnival tradition and history
Sa Sartiglia traditionally takes place in Oristano on the last Sunday and Tuesday of Carnival. The equestrian tournament is one of the last medieval tournaments of its kind still held in the Mediterranean region. The oldest documentary evidence is a register in the city archives dating from 1547–1548. It mentions a “Sortilla” that was probably held in 1546 in honour of Emperor Charles V. The dates should be distinguished: 1547–1548 is the date of the register, while 1546 is the probable year of the event mentioned in it.
The Centro di Documentazione sulla Sartiglia is located in Palazzo Sanna, at Via Eleonora 15. The building is a municipal facility serving the work of the Fondazione Oristano. The centre displays historical memorabilia, costumes, masks, documents, photographs and videos about the equestrian tournament. It also explains the history of the Gremi, the figure of su Componidori, the star run, the Pariglie and the rosettes. An interactive multimedia exhibition opened there for Sartiglia 2019.
Museums: archaeological collections and sacred art
The Antiquarium Arborense holds around 10,000 municipal cultural artefacts, most of them archaeological. A dedicated altarpiece room displays the 15th-century altarpiece of San Martino, as well as the altarpieces of Santo Cristo, dating from 1533, and the Madonna dei Consiglieri, dating from 1565. This brings archaeological collections together with several named works of religious art in one museum.
The Museo Diocesano Arborense is considered Sardinia’s largest diocesan museum. It houses a permanent collection of sacred artworks owned by the Archdiocese. If you would like to compare collections, there is a clear thematic distinction: the Antiquarium features, among other things, mostly archaeological artefacts and the altarpieces mentioned above; the Diocesan Museum focuses on sacred art from the Archdiocese’s permanent collection.
Churches and medieval fortifications
The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta stands on the site of an earlier Byzantine church dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The Chiesa e Monastero di Santa Chiara complex was built in 1343 by King Peter III of Arborea. The church of Santa Chiara retains a Gothic apse, as well as numerous remains of the side walls and the former monastery. The date 1343 refers to the complex; the surviving architectural elements offer a more tangible glimpse of its traces.
The medieval fortifications also have identifiable historical points of reference. Judge Mariano II had them reinforced at the end of the 13th century, with defensive towers at the gates and 28 irregularly spaced square turrets. Some of these turrets are still visible today. Together with the churches, the fortifications show how Oristano’s historic landmarks range from sacred buildings to defensive structures.
Torre Grande and getting there
At Torre Grande, a sandy coastal stretch extends between the Spanish Tower and Villa Baldino. At the beach, you can enjoy individual sports such as beach ball games, while activities in the water include swimming, surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Check the latest information before your visit.
Oristano can be reached from Cagliari-Elmas Airport or the Port of Cagliari. Check current road and transport conditions before travelling. This will help you choose your stay based on what matters to you: the traditional dates of Sartiglia, collections and historic buildings, or the coast near Torre Grande.
