If you’re looking for a hotel in Cabras, start by considering which aspects of the destination you want to shape your trip: wetlands and birdlife, the coast and water activities, archaeological sites, or religious and culinary traditions. These themes are quite distinct. The Stagno di Cabras is known for its landscape and birdlife; San Giovanni di Sinis beach for its stretch of sandy and rocky coastline. A museum, an ancient city, an underground place of worship and recurring rituals offer further perspectives on culture and history.

Wetland and Coast

The Stagno di Cabras is the largest pond in Sardinia and provides a habitat for flamingos and herons. The wetland is therefore ideal for nature watching. San Giovanni di Sinis beach offers a different focus: it lies on the Sinis Peninsula of the same name, within the municipality of Cabras, and stretches for about two kilometres from the headland of Torre di San Giovanni to the village of Funtana Meiga. Sandy stretches alternate with rocky coastline. The approximate length therefore describes a stretch of coast with varying terrain, not a uniformly sandy beach.

Archaeological Sites and Religious Tradition

The Museo di Cabras opened in 1997 and displays archaeological finds from the municipality. It also houses the Giganti di Mont’e Prama, considered one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in the Mediterranean. Tharros offers a different historical perspective: the ancient Phoenician-Punic-Roman city was founded on the headland of Capo San Marco between the 8th and 7th centuries BC. The Ipogeo di San Salvatore, by contrast, is an underground site of originally Nuragic origins, associated with a pagan water cult. Its walls bear numerous inscriptions and paintings dating from early Christianity to the Middle Ages. The historical range thus extends from the founding of an ancient city to an underground place of worship and its wall records.

The Corsa degli Scalzi is a chapter of its own: a religious ritual repeated on the first Sunday in September for more than 400 years. The route covers seven kilometres, from the Church of Santa Maria Vergine Assunta in Cabras to the village of San Salvatore. This gives you both a recurring date and a specific route to plan around. The Corsa differs from the archaeological themes in this respect: tradition, date and route are connected.

Activities on the Water and on the Trails

The Area Marina Protetta has around 20 dive sites along the coast between Scoglio del Catalano and Isola di Mal di Ventre. Boat trips along the coast and to Isola di Mal di Ventre are possible, and snorkelling is available in numerous parts of the protected marine area. These details provide different points of reference: for dive sites, an approximate number and a named stretch of coast; for boat trips and snorkelling, the activity and its scope. This makes it easier to compare options by the kind of experience you’re looking for.

There are also different ways to experience the landscape on land. Natural trails along the coastal zone and through the wetlands around Cabras allow you to go trekking, horse riding and mountain biking. They also offer opportunities to observe the landscape, fauna and flora. This puts outdoor activities and nature watching at the forefront as distinct interests to consider when planning.

Bottarga and Local Culture

The high-quality bottarga is made from grey mullet found in the Stagno di Cabras. The recurring Festival della Bottarga is a food festival celebrating bottarga di muggine. This connects the lagoon with a distinctive culinary tradition, while the festival gives it its own cultural setting.

Traditional dress is also part of the local culture. Cabras’s distinctive women’s costume is considered simple yet austere and elegant, but is increasingly falling out of use. The men’s costume has disappeared. These different developments add another aspect of local tradition to the religious rituals and archaeological sites.
