Posada: Nature, Coast and History
Accommodation in Posada
Posada offers several starting points for planning a trip: the river and wetlands, the coast and water sports, and historic architecture. The town is one of the four municipalities in the Parco Naturale Regionale di Tepilora. The park covers almost 8,000 hectares and includes forests, trails, springs and waterways.
River, wetlands and cycle paths
The Rio Posada has a meandering course unique in Sardinia and is a destination for canoeists and birdwatchers. A kayaking excursion on the river takes about three hours. CEAS also organizes nature observation outings by canoe on the Rio Posada. The Stagni Longu e Tundu wetlands and the nearby dune system are also well suited to nature photography and birdwatching.
About seven kilometres of cycle paths connect the historic centre at Piazza Coghe Fae with the beach access at Su Tiriarzu and the harbour. This is an approximate distance; as the path network may change, check the current route before setting out.
Coast and water sports
Su Tiriarzu is a long sandy beach just a few steps from the historic town centre. San Giovanni di Posada is on a long white beach beside a pine forest. You can windsurf and kitesurf along the coast at San Giovanni di Posada. The coastal areas have different highlights: Su Tiriarzu is close to the town centre, while the beach, pine forest and water sports opportunities define the scene at San Giovanni.
Historic town centre and Castello della Fava
Buildings with medieval structures have been preserved in the historic centre. You can walk along cobbled lanes and colourful walls. From its elevated position, Castello della Fava could control the surrounding plain, the mouth of the Rio Posada and a wide stretch of Sardinia’s east coast.
The preserved keep of Castello della Fava is about 20 metres high and includes cisterns, storerooms and stables. The castle also has exhibition areas. Access arrangements may change, so check the current conditions before visiting.
January celebrations
Celebrations in honour of Saint Anthony the Abbot take place in mid-January. They include large bonfires and processions, as well as tastings of sweets such as Cogoneddos and Aranzada. If you plan to visit Posada during this period, check the specific dates of the festivities.
Plan your stay around your interests
When looking for a hotel in Posada, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to explore nature and activities on the river, enjoy the coast and water sports, or discover the historic architecture? When considering a specific hotel offer, check its stated location in relation to your plans.
