Belvi lies at an altitude of 660 metres on Monte Genna de Crobu. Spectacular limestone cliffs define the landscape to the west, while the foothills of the Gennargentu lie to the east. Around Belvi, 2,000 hectares of woodland stretch alongside chestnut and hazelnut groves. Holly, chestnut trees, cherry trees, holm oaks, hazel bushes and oaks grow in the forests. The natural landscape ranges from mountain scenery to varied woodland areas.

Landscape and nature

A striking solitary tree is the centuries-old walnut tree in the Occili Gorge, one of the largest trees in Sardinia. Pitz’e Pranu is regarded by Belvi residents as the guardian of the village. The walnut tree stands out for its age and size, while Pitz’e Pranu is notable for its local symbolic significance. When planning your trip around nature, you can choose between woodland scenery, a remarkable tree and a mountain cherished by local residents.

Archaeological sites

Belvi also offers a range of archaeological sites to explore. The Domus de Janas attest to human presence in the area since the Late Neolithic. The Tomba di Giganti di Troculu has a burial chamber made of granite blocks and an exedra with a stepped wall. On the Su Pranu plateau, the Cuccuru Nolza complex comprises a nuraghe with a keep and a four-lobed bastion, as well as a surrounding village. The burial chamber and exedra offer a different architectural focus from the nuraghe and village complex. Together with evidence of early human presence, these sites provide several distinct cultural and historical themes to consider when planning your trip.

Art, crafts and local specialities

In Belvi’s municipal park, the MAAC open-air contemporary art museum displays large wooden sculptures of forest animals, each accompanied by a poem. Sonos de Linna is an important cultural event in Belvi. Works from previous editions are scattered throughout the old lanes of the historic centre. The historic centre is also home to craft workshops specialising in working with wood, iron and textiles. Contemporary art, works from past editions of the event and traditional crafts thus offer different cultural experiences in the village.

Caschettes are typical sweet treats from Belvi. They are made with wafer-thin pastry and filled with roasted hazelnuts, honey and orange zest. If local specialities are also part of your trip planning, they offer a distinctive culinary connection to the village.

Natural history in Belvi

The Museo di Scienze Naturali Belvì complements the exploration of nature and landscape with collections of Sardinian origin. It houses around 150 fossils from every geological era and around 500 minerals from Sardinian mines. Some of the minerals are very rare. The collection brings together two distinct areas of interest: fossils from different geological eras and minerals from Sardinian mines.
