Discover Aritzo
Accommodation in Aritzo
Aritzo offers a range of topics, from the history of the snow trade to trails through forests and natural areas on the edge of town. Museums and historic houses provide different ways to explore the local culture and history. If you are planning a hotel stay in Aritzo, you can choose what to focus on based on your interest in history, collections or walks.
The Snow Trade and Carapigna
The snow trade associated with the Neviere was already active in the 17th century, making Aritzo an important centre for distributing ice in Sardinia. The Ecomuseo della Montagna Sarda has a dedicated section on making Carapigna. This lemon sorbet was once made using mountain snow stored in the Neviere. The story therefore leads from the historic storage of snow to its former use in preparing a dessert. Trade and cuisine come together in a specific account of local history.
Museums and Exhibitions
The Ecomuseo displays traditional men’s and women’s costumes, as well as local animal masks made from goat or sheep hides. The masks include “su mamutzone”, “s’ulzu”, “sa maltenica” and “su boe”. Sa Bovida focuses on a different subject: its permanent exhibition, “Bruxas”, explores magic and witchcraft in Sardinia between the 15th and 17th centuries. The Museo Antonio Mura is housed in the former town hall and displays significant works by the painter Antonio Mura. The collections and exhibitions thus explore a range of subjects, from costumes and animal masks to history and painting.
Historic Houses and Architecture
Casa Devilla is a historic residence in the centre of Aritzo. Its original Spanish floor plan probably dates back to the 17th century. Castello Arangino dates from 1917 and is designed to resemble a medieval castle. A model of this kind was also used for aristocratic residences in the 19th and 20th centuries. The two buildings offer distinct architectural features: Casa Devilla is notable for its probably older floor plan, while Castello Arangino is designed as a castle from the early 20th century.
Trails and Nature
Su Texile has been a natural monument since 1989 and is a symbol of Aritzo. A trail in Aritzo passes through chestnut, hazelnut and cherry woods, goes by the historic fountains of Funtana Giaria, Albara and Loddo, and continues to Tacco di Texile. The route thus connects stretches of woodland, named fountains and a specific destination. Parco Pastissu lies right on the edge of town and offers nature trails for walks, as well as equipped areas for spending time and relaxing. There are therefore different ways to enjoy the outdoors: a route through woods and past fountains, or walking trails with places to rest in the park.
Plan Your Visit
No reservation is required for the Museo Etnografico. It is open Tuesday through Sunday: from September to May, its hours are 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 18:00; in summer, it opens in the afternoon from 16:00 to 19:00. As the afternoon hours vary by season, check the applicable schedule before your visit. Guided tours of the Neviere are available after contacting the Ecomuseo della Montagna Sarda o del Gennargentu. Su Texile can be reached from the edge of Aritzo by following the road towards Cantoniera Cossatzu for more than two kilometres. The information on opening hours, contacting the museum and the route offers practical guidance for planning your visits.
