Livorno Ferraris: Churches, Rice History and Culture
Accommodation in Livorno Ferraris
If you are considering Livorno Ferraris as a travel destination, you can plan your visit around specific interests: sacred art, medieval and Roman traces, the history of technology, and rice and its processing. You can encounter these themes in various churches, museums and exhibitions.
Churches, Art and Historical Traces
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Lorenzo Martire combines a clearly dated building history with a varied collection of furnishings and artworks. Under the direction of Filippo Castelli, the church was completed in 1778. On August 9 of that same year, Giuseppe Luigi Avogadro, Bishop of Casale Monferrato, consecrated the building. The collection includes paintings by Giorgio Alberini from 1823 and from around 1620, as well as a work by Bernardino Galliari from around 1776. It also includes reliquaries of Saint Clement and Saint Lawrence, and a 16th-century wooden crucifix. The different periods in which these works were created give the church both an architectural and an art-historical dimension.
The Chiesa Santa Maria d’Isana tells a different story. It is considered the only Templar church in Piedmont to have survived to this day. The church is located on a farm, three kilometers east of the center of Livorno Ferraris, along a side road that runs perpendicular to the SP 7 (Livorno Ferraris–Trino). It is accessed directly from the road, and the entrance is at street level. Check local access conditions before setting out. A festival with a walking votive procession is held here every year on August 15. According to some accounts, its origins date back to the plague of 1624. If the festival date is important to your plans, check the latest information in advance.
The marks of the drawbridge are still visible at the Torrione Medievale. They point to a moat and the former existence of a castle. The Roman necropolis of Livorno Ferraris, by contrast, dates from the 1st to the 4th century AD. Together, these sites represent distinctly different historical periods, without prescribing a particular order for visiting them.
Museums: Local Heritage and Technology
The M.A.V.O. exhibition guides visitors through the main corridor and four exhibition rooms using explanatory panels. It can be accessed directly from the street, and the entrance is at ground level. If you would like to take this information into account when planning your visit, check local access conditions before setting out.
In 1997, the Museo Civico “Ferraris” was expanded and redesigned as a cultural center with an educational and general-learning laboratory. It hosts activities and experiments on the origins of electrical engineering. The history of technology is therefore a distinct focus alongside the churches and historical collections. As the program may change, it is worth checking in advance which activities are currently available.
The Museo Sacrario “Galileo e Adamo Ferraris” is located in the former home of the Ferraris family. The museum was handed over in 1931. Its contents included documents and objects commemorating the Ferraris brothers. The Ecomuseo della Coltura del Riso focuses on historical memory and the way of life and work of the people of Livorno. On display are domestic furnishings, workshops belonging to the blacksmith, farrier and Margaio, a school, farm machinery and farm carts. Living spaces, crafts, schooling and agricultural equipment offer different ways to explore this culture of everyday life and work.
Rice and Its Production
At the Riseria Riso Acquerello, the complete production chain for organic rice is presented, from cultivation through processing to filling and packaging. Unlike the Ecomuseo, with its selection of furnishings and work tools, the focus here is on the production process. This allows you to distinguish two different aspects of rice culture: local life and work, and the individual stages of rice processing. As visitor arrangements may change, ask in advance about visiting options.
