Get to know Balmuccia through its specific routes, geological features and local history. Several aspects may be relevant when planning your trip: a clearly stated elevation gain, distinctive rock formations and several named heritage sites. This lets you assess the destination based on the themes you want to shape your stay.

Routes through varied elevations and landscapes

The route from Balmuccia to Alpe Cavurgo Superiore starts at an elevation of 560 m and reaches 1,350 m, with an elevation gain of 790 m. The starting and ending elevations make the change in altitude clear and give you a specific reference point for planning your trip. The route passes through a beech forest and across the delle Piane clearing. It also leads to a chapel dedicated to Beata Panacea, which was restored by the CAI Varallo mountain commission “Montagna Antica, Montagna da Salvare.” The transition between forest and clearing adds a specific landscape feature to the elevation profile, while the chapel provides its own connection to the area’s cultural heritage.

More trails and getting oriented

There is a small parking area at the starting point of trail 220 in Mogliani. The Sentiero delle Felci allows you to avoid the provincial road at least as far as Boccioleto. This information answers two separate questions: where to park by trail 220 and how far the Sentiero delle Felci offers an alternative to the provincial road.

Mountains and geological features

Monte Ventolaro reaches 1,830 m and is probably the most representative and panoramic peak in its group. The route from Mogliani to Cima Lavaggio crosses a peridotite formation and passes by a scree slope made of this rock. The two details emphasize different things: the elevation and standing of Monte Ventolaro within its group of peaks, and the geological features of the Lavaggio route. In Balmuccia, it is also possible to observe the deepest part of the Valsesia Supervolcano in particular. The supervolcano extends from the municipal area of Balmuccia to that of Prato Sesia. The geological picture therefore includes both a specific feature observable in Balmuccia and an area spanning two municipalities.

The routes have a clear thematic distinction: the route to Alpe Cavurgo Superiore combines elevation profile and cultural heritage, while the Lavaggio route is characterized by peridotite. Choose according to what you would like to focus on during your hike.

Church, ossuary and Teatro Sociale

The parish church of Santa Margherita was built in 1600. It is accessible via a public road, and there is a large parking area nearby. Opposite the church, the ossuary depicts Tobias and Tobit burying the dead, as well as “Ezekiel’s field” filled with dry bones. The church and ossuary offer different ways to explore the area’s cultural heritage: the building and its date of construction, and the biblical scenes in the ossuary opposite. Teatro Sociale also adds to the story of the town. It was completely restored and reopened in 2008. In Balmuccia, you can therefore encounter sacred architectural history, visual motifs and theatre history as different aspects of cultural heritage.
