Crescentino between Architectural History and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Crescentino
Crescentino can be explored through its architectural history and the wetlands and river landscapes within the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel, considering these specific themes can help you choose your destination: historic architecture and church art sit alongside designated natural areas and cycling options. Consider whether culture, landscape, or a combination of both will be the focus of your stay.
Historic Architecture and Church Art
The civic tower stands in the historic center of Crescentino and was probably built toward the end of the 14th century. Arcades line the central street in the historic center. Crescentino’s parish church is dedicated to the Beata Vergine Assunta, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its high altar contains an altarpiece of the Assumption of Mary by Claudio Francesco Beaumont.
The tower and arcades shape the description of the historic urban area; inside the parish church, a specific work of art by a named artist takes center stage. Both the dedication and the altarpiece have a Marian focus. If you are interested in sacred art, the altarpiece provides a concrete connection to the church’s dedication.
Sacred Architectural History in Different Places
The Santuario della Madonna del Palazzo was built on the Roman road from Pavia to Turin. Its architectural history also includes a notable change: during the sanctuary’s reconstruction, Crescentino Serra moved the entire bell tower to a new location in 1776. The date and the complete relocation set this event apart from a mere renovation of individual parts.
The Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie, also known as the Santuario della Madonnina, lies among rice fields north of the town. A long avenue leads to it, adorned with 15 marble statues and a marble fountain with three basins. The number of statues and the three basins give the complex an architectural profile distinct from that of the civic tower or the parish church.
The parish church of San Genuario stands on the site of the former abbey church. The Romanesque bell tower and the rear part of the apse remain from the earlier church. In the hamlet of Lignola, the Romanesque church of San Pietro is considered the oldest church in the area; it is in need of restoration. These two churches add to Crescentino’s architectural history with surviving elements of a former monastery and a church building considered particularly old.
Wetlands and River Landscapes
Crescentino is also part of the Palude di San Genuario Special Protection Area. The wetland includes slow-flowing canals, springs, and spring pools; typical wetland plant and animal species can be found there. The protected landscape is shaped by waterways and spring areas as well as by its flora and fauna.
The Baraccone area lies at the confluence of the Po and Dora Baltea rivers. It is designated both as a Special Area of Conservation and as a Special Protection Area; Crescentino is among the municipalities included. In Galli, a paved road leads to the left riverbank. There, the clear water of the Dora Baltea meets the darker water of the Po. The riverside forests in the Galli area consist mainly of poplars, willows, and acacias; elms, as well as red dogwood, elderberry, and blackberries, also occur occasionally.
These landscapes offer different points of interest to help you choose what appeals to you: the Palude is characterized by canals, springs, and typical wetland species, while Baraccone lies at the river confluence. The vegetation around Galli adds specific tree and shrub species to this landscape. This makes it possible to consider the protected areas and riverbanks in terms of the subjects that interest you most.
Cycling and Local Festivities
The “Mappa cicloturistica Capoluogo e Frazioni” cycling map shows a red route of approximately 30 kilometers for Crescentino. A suggested cycling loop also starts in Crescentino and connects the Palude di San Genuario with Isola Santa Maria on the banks of the Po. The details provide different kinds of guidance: the red route has an approximate distance, while the loop highlights its starting point and connected destinations.
The Carnevale Storico Crescentinese is also associated with specific dates: the 50th edition took place on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of February 2026, and included a traditional masked parade through the streets of Crescentino.
