When planning your trip to Albano Vercellese, nature and culture go hand in hand. Lame del Sesia Nature Park is characterized by a landscape shaped by the river and seasonal birdwatching; churches, the park’s ornithological museum and the Processione del Guado add architecture, natural history and religious tradition to the picture.

River Landscape of the Nature Park

The so-called “lame” in the nature park are wetlands formed by bends in the Sesia River that it has left behind. The term therefore refers to a specific type of river landscape. In addition to these wetlands, the park includes river meanders, bodies of water, forests, and gravel and sand areas; the Sesia shapes the landscape as a whole. For nature lovers, the relationship between the river’s course and the wetlands is especially distinctive: the abandoned bends explain the “lame,” while the other landscape features complete the picture of the park.

Birdwatching and Getting There

At suitable times, you can watch birds from equipped observation huts in the nature park. If birdwatching is your main interest, take the suitable times into account when planning your trip.

From Vercelli, you can reach Albano Vercellese via the SS 594. The park administration and the main headquarters of the nature park are located in Albano. The headquarters are housed in restored buildings on an old farm and serve as a center for recreation, education and scientific activities.

Churches and Architecture

The Chiesa della Santissima Trinità has a 12th-century apse with 15th-century frescoes. An apse is the architectural end of a church space; the different dates here make the successive layers of architecture and painting clear.

The Chiesa della Beata Vergine Assunta is a single-nave building with four side chapels and an apse. A single-nave floor plan has one main nave; the side chapels add adjoining spaces. The central dome is decorated with geometric and plant motifs, and panels of frescoes depict the Evangelists. The church is directly accessible from the street; there is also a ramp at the entrance for people with disabilities. If you would like to visit the interior, check access for your preferred time in advance.

Natural History and Religious Tradition

The nature park’s ornithological museum includes sections on forest botany, land morphology and entomology. Its scope therefore ranges from the study of plants and landforms to the study of insects, complementing birdwatching with other natural history topics.

The Processione del Guado is a historic religious event and tradition. The participating communities are Quinto vercellese, Albano, Oldenico, Greggio, Villata and San Nazzaro Sesia. As a tradition shared across several communities, it differs from the individual church buildings.

Agriculture is also part of the regional context: the rice varieties Carnaroli, Baldo and Sant’Andrea are grown in the area around the nature park. Trip planning can therefore include not only the river landscape but also a closer look at rice cultivation around the park.
