The Po runs through Moncalieri; the area extends partly across the plain and partly over hilly terrain. Several cultural themes can help you find your bearings: royal residence and city history, historic collections, park design and theatre. Castello di Moncalieri is one of the Savoy Residences of Piedmont, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997. This connection provides a tangible historical anchor for the city’s history.

Castle, Park and Garden

In Bosco del Re, the Ninfeo is a key feature between the formal garden and the landscape park. It is supplied by an underground feeder canal about 110 metres long. This brings garden design and water management together in one place; the canal’s approximate length also gives an idea of the scale of the hydraulic system.

The Torre del Roccolo is also in Bosco del Re. It was built around the middle of the 19th century as an observation tower so that the young Vittorio Emanuele II could hunt migratory birds. Unlike the Ninfeo, the focus here is not on water management but on the tower’s historical hunting function. Bosco del Re has two entrances: Santa Brigida 3 and Viale Rimembranza. Check the entrance information before your visit.

The Giardino delle Rose has the distinctive shape of an exedra and is located in the old town, at the foot of Castello Reale. Numerous roses define the garden, while its exedra shape gives it a clearly recognisable architectural profile.

Collections, Squares and Industrial Heritage

The Real Collegio Carlo Alberto is housed in a former Franciscan monastery dating from the 13th century, which was rebuilt in the 18th century. Its collections include archaeological, artistic and natural history holdings, as well as scientific instruments. This brings different fields of knowledge together in a historic building. Public visits are possible by prior arrangement; guided tours take place on the first Sunday and the second, third and fourth Saturday of each month. Check the schedule before your visit.

The Biblioteca Civica “A. Arduino” offers a glimpse of another layer of the city’s history. It occupies part of the former SAFFA match factory. The factory was founded in Moncalieri in the second half of the 19th century; the building that houses the library was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the library is a media library and art gallery, with books, magazines, DVDs, audio CDs, computers and works of contemporary art. Here, the site’s former industrial use connects with its role as a cultural venue today.

The Fonderie Teatrali Limone also tell the story of local industry: Giuseppe Limone founded them in 1924 in Moncalieri’s Borgo Mercato. The complex now includes two theatres and two rehearsal rooms. Admission is charged for performances listed in the programme; check the programme and ticket information before your visit.

The residences of the most important noble families line today’s Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, formerly called Piazza Maggiore. Its current size dates back to 1629. Porta Navina offers another glimpse of the medieval city: it is the only surviving one of Moncalieri’s original medieval defensive gates.

Visits and Seasonal Experiences

Castello Segreto is a visit format that gives access to lesser-known areas of Castello Reale di Moncalieri, which are not normally open to visitors. The 2026 programme runs until 27 December; since June 2026, the route has also included the Cappella Regia. The Royal Community Tour Moncalieri also includes admission to Castello di Moncalieri. Check the specific date and booking details before making plans.

The celebrations of Beato Bernardo are a centuries-old tradition in Moncalieri, combining religious and civic events. If this festival is important to your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant programme. Cavolfiore di Moncalieri is also seasonal: it is available in shops from mid-October until the end of winter, although availability may vary from year to year.

When planning a hotel stay, it helps to distinguish between the timeframes: the history of the castle and its buildings are part of the city’s story, while tours at the Collegio, the Castello Segreto programme and the Cavolfiore season are tied to specific periods. Check dates and seasonal availability if you are planning your visit around them.
