Bobbio Pellice: Waldensian History and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Bobbio Pellice
When choosing a hotel stay in Bobbio Pellice, two clear themes stand out: Waldensian history and alpine culture in the town, and trails through the mountain landscape. The cultural sites offer tangible landmarks in the town’s history; around the Conca del Pra and in the Valle Carbonieri, geology, walks and tours shape excursion plans. When preparing your stay, you can first decide whether to set aside more time for historic sites or for destinations in the mountains.
Local History and Alpine Culture
From the town centre, you can reach the Monumento Sibaud by a path or road in a comfortable walk of about 30 minutes. The monument was inaugurated in 1889 during celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of the “Glorioso Rimpatrio.” The date places the monument in the town’s history: it falls in a later period than the events of the 16th and 17th centuries covered by the historical trail.
On Via Sibaud, La Dogana Reale houses the centre for alpine culture. Another landmark in the town’s history is the Museo del Podio. Its exhibition is housed in a restored 19th-century neighbourhood school, where some of the original furnishings can still be seen. The building thus links a museum visit with the history of a former schoolhouse.
The Museo del Podio is part of a historical trail that opened in 2020. It connects significant sites in the municipality of Bobbio Pellice associated with events of the 16th and 17th centuries. These include Località del Podio, which is linked to a pact dating from 1561. The Protestant communities of Val Pellice and Alta Val Chisone in the Dauphiné were involved in this pact. The trail thus connects several sites through a shared theme, rather than limiting the history to a single building.
Conca del Pra and the Mountain Landscape
The Conca del Pra is a post-glacial geomorphological area. Its basin landscape formed after landslides blocked the valley floor as the Pleistocene glaciers retreated. Alongside its geological history, the area is also shaped by its protected status: the Conca del Pra is part of the Natura 2000 ZSC Oasi del Pra - Barant.
The Gran Tour del Monviso can be started from Val Pellice via the Conca del Pra. One access route follows the SP161 to the hamlet of Villanova di Bobbio Pellice, where you can park your car. From Villanova, the Conca del Pra can be reached by either the TOS115 trail or a gravel road with regulated access. Check road conditions and seasonal access rules for the gravel road in advance.
There is also a gravel road inside the Oasi del Barant. It is another point of reference in the landscape, but should not be confused with a continuation of the road to Pianoro Barbara. For planning purposes, it is therefore helpful to keep the named destinations distinct: the Conca del Pra, Oasi del Barant and Pianoro Barbara each refer to specific places in the mountain landscape.
Trails in the Valle Carbonieri
In the Valle Carbonieri, the climb to Rifugio Barbara Lowrie is frequently used by cyclists and mountain bikers. An asphalt road through the same valley leads to Pianoro Barbara, from where walks in nature are possible. The valley therefore offers different activities: the frequently used climb for cyclists and walks at Pianoro Barbara.
Another named route leads from Rifugio Barbara Lowrie via Colle Barant to Rifugio Willy Jervis. Colle Barant is at 2,373 m, and Rifugio Willy Jervis at 1,732 m. These elevations show the difference between the mountain pass and the route’s destination, without specifying a walking or driving time.
The main points of interest are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: in town, the Monumento Sibaud, La Dogana Reale and Museo del Podio represent history and alpine culture. The Conca del Pra and destinations in the Valle Carbonieri focus on the landscape, walks, and hiking and cycling trails.
