Corio is a hilly town that becomes a tourist destination during the warmer months. Its mountain area is characterized by forests and mountain streams, with scenic panoramas shaping the landscape. Churches, bridges and local traditions complement the trails as themes for a stay. If you are considering Corio as a destination, you can first decide whether nature or architectural and cultural history should be the focus of your trip.

Trails and mountain scenery

A dense network of trails connects Corio’s hamlets with the Soglio, Uia and Angiolino peaks, reaching an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters. This means there is not only information on individual hikes, but also a network of trails linking several hamlets and peaks.

The first stage of the Tre Vallate trail leads from Corio via Piano Audi to the Rifugio Alpe Soglia mountain hut. It is 13.2 kilometers long, takes 3:45 to 4:00 hours and is rated E. The route details are based on a field inspection in spring 2023. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Bune pere trail has a different destination: it passes through woods at the foot of Bric Castello di Corio and leads to the historic Losere quarries. For Tre Vallate, specific stage details are provided; for Bune pere, the focus is on its named historical destination. These differences help you choose hikes based on your interests, without applying the details of one route to another. Mountain trails can be affected by erosion, landslides or weather; check conditions before setting out.

Churches, bridges and architectural history

There are 20 churches in Corio’s mountain area, in 20 different hamlets. Its religious heritage is therefore spread across several locations. Two examples are San Genesio and Santa Croce: San Genesio was built in the Baroque style between 1744 and 1749. Santa Croce is also an 18th-century Baroque church; its construction began in 1715, beside the older church of San Genesio. The construction dates offer a specific starting point for exploring the history of the churches, though the religious heritage is not limited to these two buildings.

The bridges can also be distinguished by their design. Ponte Picca is a 14th-century stone bridge with a single Gothic arch and is the oldest crossing over the Malone stream. Ponte dell’Avvocato also dates from the 14th century, but has two arches. The chapel of San Giacomo stands at Ponte dell’Avvocato and dates back to the 17th century. Giovanni Oldrado Perini of Novalesa painted frescoes in 1587.

Language and local traditions

Franco-Provençal is still spoken in Corio. Another local tradition concerns the first chestnuts of the season: they are traditionally boiled, never roasted, because roasting is said to bring bad luck. Corio also hosts a local event every year that is part of the official Battaglie delle Reines event circuit. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the dates in advance.
