Discover Andezeno: Historic Centre and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Andezeno
Andezeno’s historic heritage can be seen in its old town centre, churches from different periods and rural farmsteads. These themes offer practical starting points for planning your trip: you can get to know the town through its architecture, history or traces of everyday rural life.
The Chiocciola and the Historic Town Centre
The Chiocciola is Andezeno’s original town centre, set on a hill. Small lanes form the historic centre, characterised by fortification walls dating from the 18th century. The narrow lanes and walls make the Chiocciola a distinct point of interest if you are interested in the town’s development and historic buildings. The centre’s spiral layout is also described in a cycling route that leads from Montaldo to Andezeno along a leafy path.
A notable viewpoint in the Chiocciola is accessible via Via Abate Villa. As conditions on the access path may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit. This lets you consider the town centre and viewpoint as two distinct aspects of the same historic area: the lanes and fortification walls as its built setting, and the viewpoint as a destination in its own right.
Churches and Their History
The Chiesa Cimiteriale di San Giorgio dates back to the 12th century and is a Romanesque parish church of the Monferrato type. Roman bricks and marble were reused in its outer wall. A gravestone slab depicts the crossed tails of two dolphins. In addition to its date, these details offer different ways of understanding the building: the reused materials point to an older structure, while the motif on the slab provides a specific visual feature.
The parish church of San Giorgio is a separate building. It was built between 1753 and 1759 and consecrated in 1764. The relics and body of Saint Justina are kept in the church. Taken together, the two churches tell of different periods and functions: the Chiesa Cimiteriale represents Romanesque architectural history, while the parish church is a later building with its own history of veneration.
Farmsteads and Rural Cultural Heritage
Cascina Fruttera is a typical linear farmstead with an enclosed courtyard, dating from the 17th or 18th century. It was also chosen as Joseph De Maistre’s summer residence. Its architectural description and historical connection give the farmstead two distinct aspects: its design and its significance in the town’s history. The designation as a summer residence refers to the choice of the farmstead, not to a documented stay by De Maistre.
Cascina Cesole is another farmstead with an enclosed courtyard, dating from the 18th century. The complex includes a granary, a stable, a farmhouse and a Baroque chapel dedicated to Madonna del Rosario. This single farmstead offers a way to explore both the built layout and the religious features of rural cultural heritage.
Local water engineering includes a sloping stretch of the Rio Santena, known as the Cascate di Cesole, which was used by the irrigation system. Near Cascina Cesole, amid brambles, lie the remains of the enclosure walls and waterwheel of an old watermill. The mill regulated the flow of the nearby Rio Santena to irrigate the surrounding fields. The visible mill remains thus complement the history of agricultural water use with a tangible structure.
Museo Balbiano and Tours
Museo Balbiano contains more than 2,000 objects from rural life in times past. The collection offers a distinct perspective on local history, complementing the farmsteads and churches. Reservations are required for guided tours and tastings. The access routes to the museum are accessible; confirm their physical condition before you travel.
Explore Andezeno on Foot or by Bike
The Marentino–Andezeno circular route reaches the Romanesque church of San Giorgio. Another option is the cycling tour between Montaldo, Pavarolo and Andezeno: from Montaldo, it follows a leafy path to the spiral-shaped historic centre. The routes described focus on different destinations—the church on the circular route, and the town centre on the cycling tour. This can help you choose a tour based on which part of Andezeno you would like to explore.
