Sauze di Cesana lies at an altitude of 1,560 m at the foot of Monte Sises, along Provincial Road 215. If you are looking for a hotel in Sauze di Cesana, you can choose what to explore based on what matters for your trip: routes and mountain sports, the landscape of the Valle Argentera, or the church history surrounding San Restituto.

Landscape and Habitats in the Valle Argentera

The Valle Argentera is a water-rich valley with pastures, surrounded by ridges and old alpine farms. Its landscape also includes a diverse range of protected habitat types: six types are protected across the community. Examples include larch and Swiss pine forests, alpine calcareous grasslands, rhododendron and bilberry shrubs, and subarctic willow scrub. Alongside pastureland, you can therefore discover a spectrum of forest, grassland and shrub habitats.

Trails and Mountain Biking Routes

The Sentiero Balcone follows old trails and connects Sauze di Cesana with the surrounding hamlets, extending as far as the Valle Argentera. The Strada Reale di Francia traces the routes of older paths and connects Sauze di Cesana with Rollieres and the three Champlas hamlets. In some sections, it follows the current provincial road. The two routes have different reference points: the Sentiero Balcone links the hamlets and the Valle Argentera, while the Strada Reale di Francia links Rollieres and the three Champlas hamlets.

The Cima Bosco mountain biking loop starts and ends in Sauze di Cesana. It is 19.5 km long, rated difficult, and has an elevation gain of 922 m. These details give you a clear route profile for planning your own ride. Another mountain biking route runs from Sauze di Cesana to Cimabosco and back; experienced riders can extend it to Thures. The Cima Bosco loop is described by its length, difficulty and elevation gain, while the option to extend this other route is explicitly for experienced riders.

Winter Activities and Seasonal Conditions

Cross-country skiing, ski touring and snowshoeing are now practiced on the valley floor along the Ripa stream and on the slopes of Monte Cimabosco between Sauze di Cesana and the hamlet of Rollieres. The frozen waterfalls in the Valle Argentera are a winter destination for visitors interested in ice climbing. These activities are therefore associated with different locations in the valley. As seasonal conditions can vary, check conditions before making plans.

San Restituto and Local History

The church of San Restituto stands away from the town center on a steep slope opposite the Clivio stream. Its distinctive bell tower belongs to the Delfino-Romanesque architectural style, typical of religious buildings in the upper valley.

The church is mentioned as early as 1065 in a charter issued by Bishop Cuniberto. It was used by the three neighboring parishes of Sauze di Cesana, Champlas du Col and Rollieres. Another historical reference is 1771, when parish pastoral functions were transferred to the chapel of San Giacomo in Sauze di Cesana. An article dated May 25, 2025, describes the feast of San Restituto as a gathering of the community at the church and as an old celebration of faith and tradition.
