Carignano between the Po landscape and churches
Accommodation in Carignano
Carignano brings together a protected river landscape and the history of its churches and town. On the Po, in the heart of Parco del Po Torinese, lies the natural landscape around the well-known oxbow bend called “Po Morto.” Protected river habitats, riparian woodlands and side channels shape this area. There are also churches and historic buildings from different periods, as well as a museum with materials from the Carignano area. Landscape, architecture and local history offer distinct themes for your stay.
River landscape and outdoor activities
The protected stretch of the Po near Carignano includes a completely flat route through the landscape. It is suitable for walks, cycling and mountain biking. Check local route conditions before setting out. Around Carignano, rows of mulberry trees, poplar groves, irrigation canals and old farmhouses also shape the scenery. Medieval fortified houses, chapels and rural hamlets are found nearby. Working landscapes and historic settlement patterns coexist here as part of the area’s character.
Churches and architectural history
The Chiesa di Nostra Signora delle Grazie dates to the early modern period: construction began in 1601 and was completed in 1611. Careful restoration work brought the façade’s original rich polychromy back to light. Polychromy means the use of multiple colours; here, it is a distinctive feature of the restored façade.
The Chiesa di San Giuseppe was built between 1677 and 1687. Its elliptical floor plan is described as rare in 17th-century Piedmont. It combines the layout of a Latin cross with the ellipse of the choir, above which rises an equally elliptical dome. Construction of the Duomo di Carignano began in 1756. The church was consecrated in 1764, and the work was entrusted to Benedetto Alfieri. These dates mark different stages in the building’s history: in this case, construction began several years before the church was consecrated.
In the Borgovecchio district, Via Vittorio Veneto preserves Carignano’s only urban street with a surviving double row of arcades. The Cappella di San Rocco tells a different story: it was commissioned in 1598 as a votive offering to the patron saint against the plague and rebuilt in 1632. Its gabled porch was intended to shelter pilgrims stopping along the way.
The Chiesa della Madonna della Misericordia is also a votive church. It was built from 1640 at the initiative of the local community, after a sudden flood of the Po prevented French troops from entering the town. The Santuario del Valinotto, also called the Cappella della Visitazione, is also set in the Carignano landscape, on the road to Osasio and Virle. It is considered an early masterpiece by architect Bernardo Antonio Vittone.
Museum and visit planning
The Museo Civico e Archeologico “Giacomo Rodolfo” preserves archaeological, artistic and documentary materials from the Carignano area. The museum was established following the donation of the collection by the heirs of Professor Giacomo Rodolfo. Its aim is to preserve and pass on evidence of the past and the cultural heritage recognised as belonging to the Carignano community.
If you would like to visit Carignano’s monuments as part of a guided tour, you must book by phone at least two weeks in advance. Check the current arrangements in good time when planning your visit.
