Ruà: Stone Heritage and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Ruà
The Anello del Ciapel loop is explicitly associated with Rorà Fucine/Ruà: the route begins and ends there. Rorà’s stone heritage is reflected in the Ecomuseo della Pietra “Le Loze di Rorà” and at the historic Tupinet quarry. This gives you two specific themes for a stay in Ruà: a designated cycling route and a cultural heritage that brings together everyday life, stoneworking and historic quarrying.
Stone, Everyday Life and Tupinet
The ecomuseum comprises two sites. One is in the village of Rorà, and the other is at the disused Tupinet quarry in the Rorà valley. The second site reconstructs how stone was quarried; the historic quarry is laid out as a museum trail. Together, the village museum and the site of former quarrying represent different aspects of the same stone heritage.
The museum site in Rorà recreates several aspects of everyday life: the kitchen, stable, bedroom and school. There are also two rooms dedicated to Waldensian history and stoneworking. The themes range from domestic life to regional history and the use of stone.
The historic Tupinet quarry has its own visitor requirements: visits are limited to small groups accompanied by an authorised guide, and are subject to favourable weather conditions. Check the current visiting arrangements before your trip. This distinguishes the museum site in the village from a visit to the former quarry, which is subject to these conditions.
Cycling Loop and Stone Landscape
The Anello del Ciapel is a loop that starts and ends near Rorà Fucine/Ruà. It is 9.78 kilometres long. The route runs over asphalt and unpaved paths and is designated for mountain bikes and road bikes. Its length, surfaces and the stated bike types give you specific points to consider when planning this loop into your trip.
The Anello di Pietra has a different focus. It runs from Borgata Rumer in Rorà to Punta Cournour in Rorà, following an old municipal road that links the Rumer settlement with the area near Punta Cournour. The route offers a full view of the area shared by the three municipalities of Rorà, Luserna San Giovanni and Bagnolo Piemonte, where Luserna stone is still quarried today. If you are interested in the connection between the route and the stone landscape, the focus here is different from that of the designated cycling loop. Seasonal conditions may affect access on foot; check the trail conditions before setting out.
Route Guidance
The Peyret track leads to the hairpin bend above Borgata Ruà. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out. Another route description places the second hairpin bend in Località Rua, at an elevation of 698 metres. Shortly afterwards, the route leaves Località Fucine, at 693 metres, on the right. These two place and elevation references help you follow the sequence of the route described.
The “Valanza (Ex Rifugio) da Luserna San Giovanni, giro” route also reaches a specific landmark: it joins the asphalt road just above Borgata Ruà. Together with the Peyret track and the place references to Rua and Fucine, this gives you a selection of named route connections to explore, depending on your interest in cycling, the stone landscape or precise route guidance.
