Bussoleno brings together medieval architectural and industrial history with nature and hiking. To plan your stay, you can first decide whether you are mainly interested in historic architecture and milling heritage, or would like to include a stage of the hiking trail network and the climbing areas. The places and themes described offer different points of interest: from houses and the town wall to former workplaces, vineyard supports and a route from the railway station.

Medieval architecture and local history

Casa Aschieri is a bourgeois and commercial house dating from the late 14th century, located on the Via Francigena. Its architecture includes a raised terrace supported by stone columns, which formerly served as a marketplace. Casa Amprimo presents a different architectural style: this typical medieval building has a ground-floor portico supported by masonry columns. These two houses offer a chance to explore both architectural details and former uses.

La Cinta Muraria encloses the ancient village on the right bank of the Dora Riparia. The town wall was built in the second half of the 14th century. The historic centre also includes the Porta di Francia. Together, these structures offer different points of reference for the town’s history: an enclosed village, a town gate and houses whose architecture is associated with bourgeois life and trade.

Mills, former workplaces and vineyards

In Borgata Richettera, you can find former sites for the production of stone, lime and sand. These include a small quarry, a lime kiln and artificial caves. Each place represents different work processes and areas of production, so they should not be considered a single complex.

The milling heritage also encompasses more than one aspect. The building of the mill at Piazza del Mulino houses a museum whose exhibition is organised around water, wood, stone and grain. Mulino Varesio has two millstones for producing flour. While the exhibition brings together four elements, Mulino Varesio focuses on the millstones and their function.

Bussoleno’s vineyard landscape includes stone posts made from quarrying waste and used to support the vines. Here, viticulture meets the reuse of stone material. This offers a distinct perspective on the landscape, alongside the former production sites in Borgata Richettera and the mills.

Nature reserve and stage towards Richettera

Orrido di Foresto was designated a nature reserve in 1998, primarily to protect prickly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus). The area covers 197 hectares and extends across the municipalities of Bussoleno and Susa. This designation and the protection of the plant species give Orrido a different focus from the town’s architectural and industrial history.

A stage on the regional hiking trail network for hiking heritage runs from Bussoleno railway station to Borgata Argiassera-Richettera. The stage also includes climbing areas near distinctive rock faces, which are now used for sport climbing. Both the stage destination and the climbing areas are therefore relevant when planning your trip; check route and climbing conditions before you travel.

The Via Francigena stages on the valley floor are served in most municipalities by stations on the SFM3 Torino–Bardonecchia line. The stops mentioned include Bussoleno, Bruzolo, Borgone Susa and Condove. If you are planning to combine rail travel and the route, check current train connections before your trip. The stops listed provide a guide, but are no substitute for checking the relevant timetable.

Choose the focus of your stay

A specific comparison can help you choose between the different themes: houses, the town wall and the town gate represent medieval architectural history; the museum, millstones and stone posts illustrate different connections between work and landscape. The stage from the railway station to Borgata Argiassera-Richettera and the associated climbing areas offer another focus.
