Moncenisio: Churches, Alpine Culture and Historic Routes
Accommodation in Moncenisio
Moncenisio brings together religious architectural history, Alpine heritage and routes through a high-altitude landscape. Churches, collections and historic routes tell different stories about the area; at Lago del Moncenisio, the mountain landscape takes centre stage. When planning your visit, you can focus on what interests you most: sacred art, the history of Alpine connections, or nature walks.
Churches, Festival Traditions and Cultural Heritage
The present-day Chiesa di San Giorgio replaced the former parish church in 1659. On the main façade, a carved wooden portal depicts Saint George slaying the dragon. The church’s architectural history and figurative design offer two distinct points of interest. It is also part of the “Chiese a porte aperte” trail and can be visited independently using new technologies. Before your visit, check which technical solution is available.
The municipality of Moncenisio’s patron saint festival is dedicated to Saint George. It is celebrated with a distinctive procession on the last Sunday in April in Ferrera Moncenisio. The Cappella di San Giuseppe offers another way to explore religious art: dating from the 18th century, it preserves a cycle of Stations of the Cross panels. Contemporary Piedmontese artists created the panels under the direction of painter Lia Laterza.
The Biblioteca comunale di Moncenisio includes the Centro di Documentazione Alpina. Its texts explore the mountains and Alpine passes, as well as the cultural memory of mountain communities. The Ecomuseo “Le Terre al Confine,” in contrast, focuses on the ethnographic heritage of the mountain region. Its themes include milk processing, haymaking, porters and mountain guides, as well as festivals, legends and local customs. The ecomuseum is located at Via Trento 9, 10050 Moncenisio.
The seasons also shape some cultural themes: during the Christmas season, a historical nativity scene brings Moncenisio’s old mill, oven and washhouse to life. These places are part of the ecomuseum trail. One area of the Ecomuseo is also dedicated to the fauna and flora of the mountain forests around Moncenisio; the animals featured include ibex, wild boar, foxes, hares and squirrels.
Alpine Routes and Historic Connections
The Strada Reale del Moncenisio was built between the 17th and 18th centuries. An important thoroughfare on the Via Francigena, it connected Italy and France. Today, the historic road offers a trekking experience for those interested in hiking and history. In the Val di Susa, the Via Francigena stretches for more than 170 kilometres and includes two historic variants. Its route descends from Moncenisio and Monginevro towards Turin. The Strada Reale is a single historic thoroughfare and should be distinguished from the larger route.
A suggested snowshoeing route is the Forte Varisello–Lago del Moncenisio trail. The stated walking time is 1 hour and 30 minutes, with an elevation gain of 378 metres; the starting point is 10050 Moncenisio. Check seasonal conditions before setting out. Forte Varisello itself was built between 1877 and 1880 as a pentagonal fort in a ditch, with two firing positions. Its shape and construction give the route a distinct military-history connection.
Landscape at Lago del Moncenisio
Lago del Moncenisio lies at an altitude of 2,083 metres, near the watershed between the Valle di Susa and France’s Maurienne Valley. Its dam was built around the 1970s. The surrounding peaks offer opportunities for nature walks. These landscape routes therefore differ from the historic ones: the focus here is on altitude, the watershed and the mountain surroundings.
A stay in Moncenisio offers a range of themes to explore: the Chiesa di San Giorgio and the Cappella di San Giuseppe introduce visitors to religious architectural and artistic history; the Ecomuseo and documentation centre explore the cultural memory of the mountain region. The Strada Reale and Via Francigena represent historic connections, while the snowshoeing route and walks among the surrounding peaks put the landscape centre stage.
