Passerano lies in the hills of the lower Monferrato in the Province of Asti. The town’s history is reflected in several distinct themes: a mint with a clearly documented period of operation, a castle of medieval origin, and churches with striking architectural features. When looking for a hotel, this cultural focus can help you plan your stay around a particular theme. Depending on whether you are especially interested in history, architectural forms, or a section of the Fossil Walk, different landmarks will take centre stage.

Castle and Mint

Castello di Passerano dates from the 14th century. The Conti Radicati probably built it on the ruins of an earlier structure. The castle is considered the most important monument in the municipality. Its imposing, enclosed form rises above the town and surrounding landscape, making it a striking landmark in Passerano’s history. The medieval tower was converted into a bell tower in 1704. The courtyard garden is also a cultural and historical landmark in its own right: it is listed as one of the historic gardens of Monferrato. When planning a visit to the castle, bear in mind that public access is restricted except during events.

The Antica Zecca di Passerano tells a different side of the town’s history. The first coins were minted there from 1589, and the mint operated until 1598. That year, the Duke of Savoy revoked the right to mint coins because counterfeit coins were still being produced. Today, the historic mint houses the municipal library. The former minting activity and its present-day municipal use represent different layers of time at the same site. If you would like to visit the library, check local access arrangements in advance.

Church Architecture in Passerano and Schierano

The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo Apostoli shows how architectural details differ between the exterior and interior. Its facade has a late Baroque character and is made of exposed brick, complemented by a terracotta bell tower. Inside, the church is divided into three aisles. Natural light enters through finely crafted oval windows. The building thus draws attention to its materials and facade design, as well as to its layout and the light coming in. Visitors who look closely at church architecture can observe these features individually and then consider how the exterior and interior work together.

In Schierano, a hamlet of Passerano Marmorito, the Baroque Chiesa di San Grato Vescovo is another landmark. It provides its own sacred focal point among Schierano’s local landmarks. The area therefore offers different architectural interests side by side: the distinctive facade and interior details of the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo Apostoli, and the Baroque church in Schierano.

Route and Landmarks in Schierano

The fourth stage of the Fossil Walk follows the foot of Radicati Castle and ends in the centre of Passerano. The route provides a direct link between the castle landscape and the town centre. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Another landmark in Schierano is the Panchina Gigante Verde Pastello. It was inaugurated on 7 April 2019 on the hill known as “Il Mondo.” Together with the Baroque Chiesa di San Grato Vescovo, it offers two distinct points of interest: church architecture and a dated inauguration at a named hill. This makes it easier to consider Schierano as a focus in its own right when exploring the area around Passerano, without reducing the two landmarks to the same theme.

Landscape and Smaller Local Stories

An old, impressive cedar of Lebanon stands in the well-kept park of nearby Castello di Primeglio. This landscape feature differs from the courtyard garden at Castello di Passerano, which is listed as one of the historic gardens of Monferrato: here, it is a single tree in a park; there, a castle courtyard garden with a historic designation.

In Primeglio, the former public weighing station has also been transformed into the “peso dei pensieri,” where small pictures bearing motivational sayings are displayed. The scale’s former everyday function and its present-day design give the site a different scale from the grand buildings. Thus, the cultural perspective on Passerano and its nearby surroundings takes in not only castles and churches, but also smaller interventions that connect with the history of a public place.
