Olmo Gentile combines a striking landscape with a layered architectural history and a variety of routes. The old town center is home to historic buildings, while the castle complex consists of a tower and a residential building. The routes also differ: alongside the Giro delle 5 Torri, which can be walked at any time of year, there is the Roccaverano–Olmo Gentile–Serole–Bric Puschera cycling route, which can be travelled in several different ways.

Castle Complex and Historic Buildings

The castle complex consists of two clearly separate parts: a tower and a residential building. The square tower is built of sandstone and probably dates to the 12th century. The residential area is considerably later: Bishop Gozzani commissioned it in 1681. The complex therefore brings together two distinct historical reference points: a tower believed to be medieval and a residential area with a specific construction date.

The old town center also preserves buildings with distinctive features. The construction year, 1587, is carved into a portal of an old fortified farmhouse. An old hayloft has a roof made of stone slabs that is still in fairly good condition. The details differ: the date on the portal stands out at the farmhouse, while at the hayloft it is the roofing material and its state of preservation.

The architectural history also includes the Church of the Disciplinati, which Bishop Gozzani had built during his stay in Olmo Gentile. The private chapel of San Sebastiano has a different history: it was built in the last century on the ruins of a very old parish church, with some of the earlier church’s forms retained. The town thus has both buildings with a recorded construction date and religious buildings whose history is linked to Gozzani or to an older church complex.

Landscape and Geology

The landscape of Olmo Gentile includes a ridge that resembles a promontory, as well as tuff-rich soil abundant in shells and marine fossils. This offers two different perspectives on the area: the shape of the high ground and the geological components of the soil. If you are interested in the landscape and natural history, these specific features complement the buildings in the town center.

The Walking Loop and Cycling Route

The Giro delle 5 Torri walking loop connects the medieval towers of Monastero Bormida, San Giorgio Scarampi, Olmo Gentile, Roccaverano and Vengore. It can be walked at any time of year and follows roads that are partly paved, gravel roads, tracks, and paths through woods and meadows. The terrain and scenery therefore change along the loop. Official red-and-white CAI trail markers, signs and arrows to the main places and sights, as well as 5T directional signs on the signposts, help you find your way.

The Roccaverano–Olmo Gentile–Serole–Bric Puschera cycling route is a separate route. It can be travelled by car, on horseback, by bicycle or mountain bike, and on foot; some sections can only be covered on foot. A branch of this cycling route in the municipality of Olmo Gentile leads to a rocky slope with a rock face. There, a small footbridge crosses the Tatorba stream. The route therefore combines different ways of getting around with a specific landscape feature.

A Culinary Landmark

The Trattoria di Geminio, also known as Ristorante della Posta, is considered one of the cornerstones of the cuisine of the Langa Astigiana. Its name offers another link to the local food culture, alongside the historic buildings and routes that shape Olmo Gentile.
