Grazzano Badoglio: Cultural History and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Grazzano Badoglio
Church and art history, memorial sites, signposted walking trails and wine traditions give Grazzano Badoglio a range of distinct highlights. If you are looking for a hotel in Grazzano Badoglio, you can start by considering the destination in light of your planned stay: would you like to focus on historic sites, a walk or culinary experiences?
Churches, Art and Local History
The parish church of Grazzano Badoglio is the former abbey church, founded by Aleramo between 950 and 960. In the third chapel on the right is an altarpiece by Andrea Pozzo depicting the death of Saint Francis Xavier. The church of Santo Spirito was built by the Confraternity of the Disciplinanti dello Spirito Santo between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This places a church founded between 950 and 960 alongside a much later building as distinct historical landmarks.
The Badoglio family’s old house is now used as a historical museum. The Badoglio Stele is a 24-metre-high steel monument on a large granite base. Nearby, on the Madonna dei Monti hill, two monuments commemorate the partisan resistance: one stele remembers the Banda Lenti, while the other monument honours all the partisan formations active in the Monferrato Casalese. Grazzano Badoglio is also home to a simulated archaeological excavation site belonging to the Ecomuseo del Basso Monferrato Astigiano.
Walking Trails and Their Destinations
The Sentiero delle Tre Pievi is 7.5 km long, signposted with white-and-red CAI markers, and listed as taking 2.5 hours to walk. It runs along vineyard ridges and leads to the chapels of S. Salvatore and S. Martino. The Sentiero Tra i prati e le vigne della Terra di Aleramo is 8 km long and is also marked in white and red. Its route runs from Piazza Cotti to Cascina Orti and back to Grazzano Badoglio.
The routes differ in length by only half a kilometre, but their described destinations are distinct: the Sentiero delle Tre Pievi passes the two chapels, while the other route connects Piazza Cotti with Cascina Orti and leads back to town. A specific walking time is also given for the first trail. These details offer different points of reference when choosing a walk by distance and route.
Wine and Culinary Traditions
Soma d'aj is considered a traditional farmhouse snack during the grape harvest. It is made with extra-virgin olive oil, Monferrato garlic and homemade bread, and served with Barbera grapes. The ingredients and its connection to the grape harvest give this dish a clear seasonal link. Azienda Vitivinicola Fratelli Natta in Grazzano Badoglio offers wine tastings and wine sales. Tenuta Santa Caterina produces Grignolino d'Asti DOC.
In spring, the Pro Loco of Grazzano Badoglio organises a restorative snack in the courtyard of Casa Badoglio after the Camminare il Monferrato walk along the vineyard trails. As seasonal arrangements may change, check the current date before your trip.
