Discover Vigliano D'asti
Accommodation in Vigliano D'asti
Vigliano d’Asti lies in the hilly landscape typical of the lower Monferrato. Lush vineyards alternate with grain fields, meadows and woods, shaping the landscape. Local highlights also include the Strada del Vino Astesana, regular walks held as part of the Festa Patronale, marine fossils and the Castello di Vigliano d’Asti. If you are choosing a destination for its scenery, routes or local history, you will find several different points of interest here.
Scenery and Wine Routes
Vigliano d’Asti is one of the municipalities taking part in the Strada del Vino Astesana. Known by its former name, Astesana, the wine route comprises eight scenic itineraries along quiet side roads that follow the hilltops. The Astesana route can be explored by car, on horseback, by bicycle or on foot. This gives you several ways to travel if you want to include the hilly landscape and its side roads in your trip.
August Festivals and Walks
The Festa Patronale lasts about a week and takes place between the first and second weeks of August; the exact dates may vary from year to year. Regular events include the amateur race Correndo per Vigliano and the Quattro passi per Vigliano walk. On 6 August 2026, the third edition of Alla scoperta delle balene took place. The walk passed through the woods and vineyards between Valmontasca and Sabbionera, along Vigliano d’Asti’s local whale trails. If you are travelling for a festival, check the exact dates with the local organiser.
Fossils and Architectural History
The Colline del mare of Vigliano d’Asti preserve marine fossils from the Pliocene. Finds include molluscs, plants, shells and remains of baleen whales. Nearby in Asti, the baleen whale discovered in 1959 in the hamlet of Valmontasca is on display at the Museo Paleontologico di Asti. Check the current exhibition details before visiting the museum.
The Castello di Vigliano d’Asti stands in the highest part of the village and enjoys an exceptional panoramic position. Today it is a simple rectangular building; its main façade dates from the 19th century. The De Montibus family built it as a residence on the ruins of an older castle. Documents indicate that this earlier castle already existed in 1130. The date therefore refers to the predecessor castle, not to the later residence or its main façade. This makes it possible to distinguish the older castle, the residence and the more recent façade as separate historical layers.
Wine, Truffles and Fassona Beef
Vigliano d’Asti’s vineyards produce Barbera, Cortese, Grignolino and Dolcetto wines, as well as fine grappa. Its carefully tended truffle grounds also shape local produce, yielding prized white truffles of excellent quality. FASSONA DAY took place on 17 May 2026. Following the previous year’s edition, the event returned with a full programme of discussion, in-depth exploration and community activities centred on high-quality Piemontese Fassona beef. If you are planning to attend a future edition, check its date with the organiser.
