Montecapraro lies on a plateau on the left side of the Curone, at an altitude of 828 meters. The village is located on the provincial road to Bruggi. Alongside its location, the landscape, trails described in different ways, and historic churches are central to planning a trip.

Location and landscape

Outside the built-up area, the ridge of Montecapraro drops steeply toward the Curone. The landscape around the village also includes extensive pastures and mineral springs. Along with the plateau, the ridge, open pastures, and springs are all part of the scenery. Those interested in landforms and natural areas will find several aspects of the local surroundings here.

Hiking trails with different features

The Stalle Salogni–Rifugio Orsi trail is short and has no challenging elevation changes. It passes through a beech forest to the “Ezio Orsi” mountain hut. The route is also suitable for families and can be combined with other nearby trails. Its length, elevation profile, forest section, and destination give this trail several concrete features to consider when planning a hike.

The Sentiero Salogni–Monte Chiappo has a different character: it climbs through an extensive beech forest and reaches Bocca di Crenna. The pass lies on the watershed between Val Curone and Val Borbera and is impressive and windy.

This gives you a clear basis for comparing the routes: the trail to Rifugio Orsi is described as short, with no challenging elevation changes; the Sentiero Salogni–Monte Chiappo is defined by its climb, forest, and pass destination. You can choose between them based on whether you prefer a short route with little elevation gain or a climb that leads to a pass.

Directions to the Sentiero Salogni–Monte Chiappo

After passing Montecapraro, you reach Salogni a few kilometers farther on. The start of the Sentiero Salogni–Monte Chiappo is on the right, at the provincial road’s kilometer 5 marker. This provides a specific landmark for finding the start of the trail. Road conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

Churches and historic furnishings

The Church of San Giovanni Battista stands at the edge of the small settlement of Montecapraro. In 1788, it had five altars. Alongside its location at the edge of the settlement, this historic furnishing is a separate point of reference for the village’s history.

The Chapel of Madonna del Rosario also has distinctive furnishings: it houses the Mysteries of the Rosary, dating from the early 18th century, and has a stucco altar. The dates refer to different details: the five altars in the Church of San Giovanni Battista date to 1788, while the Mysteries of the Rosary are from the early 18th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the historical references to the church and chapel by period.
