Discover Gamalero: Trails, Green Spaces and History
Accommodation in Gamalero
Gamalero offers several ways to plan a stay: green spaces and sports, trails through varied landscapes, market days and historic buildings. As you plan, consider whether you would prefer to spend time outdoors, visit during a local event or learn about the town’s history.
Green Spaces, Sports and an Orchard Park
The Area Verde Monica Bassan covers more than 6,000 m². The site has around 45 trees native to the area. The Centro sportivo Piercarlo Spandonari includes a full-size football pitch, a five-a-side football pitch and a tennis court; use of these facilities is free. These two places offer different ways to include green spaces and sports in your daily plans.
Another green space is the Parco dei frutti in Gamalero. It covers around 5,500 m² and is home to more than 140 plants cultivated using organic farming methods. Its size and the variety of plants give the park a distinctive place among the town’s green spaces.
Trails Through the Plain and Floodplain
The Strada Franca del Monferrato is a long-distance trail through plains and low hills. It passes through ten municipalities in the Province of Alessandria, including Gamalero. The Sentiero dei Cinque Ponti offers a different landscape: it runs entirely through the Bormida floodplain. If you are interested in these trails, their different landscape settings can provide a useful starting point for choosing between them.
The Sentiero dei Cinque Ponti passes the surviving remains of Castel Merlino. After the former castle was demolished in 1802, these remains became its only surviving trace. The trail also provides information about the Canale Carlo Alberto, built between 1833 and 1839. The trail description thus brings together the landscape and local history without assuming a walking time or a particular level of difficulty.
The Area Verde di Gamalero lies along the Rio Cervino ecotourism trail. This large public space is intended for sports, recreation and relaxation. It is another point of interest for travelers interested in the town’s open spaces and leisure opportunities.
Markets and Events
A market with food and clothing stalls is held in the town center on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you are planning your stay around a market day, check the dates again before traveling. The Feste Patronali di San Lorenzo in Gamalero take place every year on August 10.
The Festival di San Lorenzo offers a cultural program featuring book presentations, meetings with authors, theater performances, concerts and exhibitions. The market, patron saint’s festival and festival are different occasions that offer a glimpse of various aspects of local life. If you are planning around a particular date, it is worth checking the dates of the relevant events.
Churches and Historic Sites
The Church of San Rocco stands in the hamlet of the same name in Gamalero and was built in 1789. A second chapel, also dedicated to San Rocco, is located in the Cascinali Spassona area. It is associated with the saint’s role as a protector against epidemics, particularly in connection with the plague of 1630.
The Church of San Lorenzo was built in 1515 to enlarge the earlier Church of Santa Maria. The Oratorio di San Sebastiano e della Santissima Trinità was built in 1665 on the site of an earlier parish church and served as the seat of the Confraternity of the Santissima Trinità . Together, these buildings offer insight into different periods in Gamalero’s religious history.
The Biblioteca Civica di Gamalero is located in the historic Palazzo Piccini at Piazza Aldo Moro 3 and occupies around 130 m² there. This location, too, connects a specific building in the town with its cultural life.
