Castelbottaccio combines scenic trails with a townscape whose churches and traces in stone reflect different eras. This offers two distinct focuses for planning your trip: exploring the surrounding area and taking a closer look at the historic center and its buildings.

Landscape and views around Castelbottaccio

The Tratturo Celano-Foggia crosses the area around Castelbottaccio. This historic transhumance route is about 208 kilometers long and connected the summer pastures in Abruzzo with the winter pastures in Apulia. The landscape includes oak woods, areas of forage crops, gentle hills and green pastures, as well as badlands, small gorges and old roads. Open and wooded areas alternate with striking landforms.

From Colle Iannone, the highest point in the area at 717 meters, the view stretches across the Matese area and the Biferno Valley to the Adriatic Sea. On clear days, the Tremiti Islands are also visible. The viewpoint and surrounding landscape offer different perspectives on the area: across the valley in one direction, and far out over the Adriatic in another.

Hikes for different time frames

The recommended routes vary in duration and destination. The complete circuit of the historic center focuses on its five construction phases, towers, walls and small gorges. Allow two days to complete the walking tour. If you are planning a shorter outing, consider the recommended return route along the old road towards Santa Giusta: it passes through the countryside to rural religious sites and takes four hours in total.

Another recommended route follows the old road to the Biferno River and explores the river landscape. Allow one day for the return route; it is suitable for fit hikers with good stamina. The routes can therefore be distinguished by duration: from the several-hour outing towards Santa Giusta to the full-day route to the Biferno and the two-day circuit of the historic center.

Santa Giusta: landscape and history

The Santa Giusta hill is about two kilometers from town, at an elevation of around 650 meters, and covers approximately three hectares. Its sweeping panorama and peaceful, spiritual atmosphere define the character of the place. The Chiesa di Santa Giusta is surrounded by greenery, with a picnic area nearby.

The site also has a long history. In Samnite times, a place of worship dedicated to Hercules was probably located there. A villa was built in Roman times, followed later by a cell of Basilian monks and then hermits. This sequence gives Santa Giusta a distinct historical dimension alongside its natural character.

Churches and works of art in town

The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie is a Baroque stone church with three naves and an irregular floor plan. It was originally a Norman oratory. It was consecrated for worship in May 1178 and reopened in 1999 after restoration. The church houses three wooden statues: Santa Lucia by Crescenzo Ranallo of Oratino, dating from 1841; the Madonna delle Grazie by Giacomo Colombo, dating from 1694; and San Giuseppe by Silverio Giovannitti of Oratino, dating from 1780.

The Cappella di Sant'Oto is a single-nave church built of white stone. Its plain façade is topped by a small bell gable. It opened for worship in April 1899 and was rebuilt in 1989. The Croce Stazionaria also tells of changes to the townscape: over time, the stone cross was moved several times within the town and appears to have been reassembled from elements with different origins. This makes its original form difficult to determine.

Stone as part of the townscape

The Morgia Corvara, also known as Morgia Curvata, is a large outcrop of whitish calcareous sandstone. The material served as a resource for craftspeople and stonemasons. Stone portals dating from 1900 onwards are another trace of the town’s building history. They can be found, among other places, on Corso Umberto I°, Via Vittorio Emanuele III, Via XXIV Maggio and Piazza della Vittoria.

A named place to stay

Agriturismo Le Morge is about one kilometer from the town center, on the road to Lupara. It offers bed-and-breakfast accommodation with views of the Biferno Valley.
