Campodipietra can be explored through its churches, works of art and the history of its historic settlement. The historic settlement largely retains the features of a medieval village that developed around the parish church of San Martino. Different aspects of local history come to light in the churches and festivals. For travelers who want to combine their stay with an interest in culture and history, this offers a clear guide.

San Martino and the Medieval Town Center

The Parrocchia San Martino Vescovo is a Baroque church built in 1770 near one of the three gates in the medieval ring of walls. Its apse contains five paintings from 1774 by the Molisan painter Paolo Gamba. They depict the Immaculate Conception and the four Evangelists. The five works therefore share a location and year of creation, while their subjects encompass different religious themes.

The cylindrical bell tower also points to an earlier architectural history: it was built on the tower of an old baronial palace that once had a richly decorated onion dome. Together with the settlement’s development around San Martino, this offers a view of the town at different scales: from the medieval village to individual buildings and works of art.

San Bonaventura and Other Churches

The Chiesa San Bonaventura is a Romanesque church on Piazza Rimembranza. Its history also includes a later turning point: after suffering severe damage in the 1688 earthquake, it was rebuilt in 1700. Cardinal Vincenzo Orsini reconsecrated the church in 1705. The Romanesque designation describes its style; the rebuilding and reconsecration mark events in its history.

The rural Chiesa di Santa Maria in Valle is located in the hamlet of Civitella, within the territory of Campodipietra. It was probably originally a funerary chapel. This tentative interpretation is part of the site’s history, but remains a hypothesis. Another chapel in the municipality is the Cappella di Sant’Antonio in Contrada San Pietro. The churches are therefore located in different named places within the territory of Campodipietra and offer different ways to explore its religious history.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The procession takes place in September along the road leading to the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Valle. Music and entertainment evenings are also held at the church in September. Another fixed date is June 13: every year on this day, the feast of Saint Anthony is celebrated at the Cappella di Sant’Antonio.

If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates and program in advance. The September dates can vary, as can the format of the music and entertainment evenings; details of the Saint Anthony festival may also change. This lets you take the different occasions throughout the year into account when planning, without conflating the September events with the June date.

Landscape and Getting Your Bearings

Beyond the churches, the Tratturo Lucera-Castel di Sangro passes through the outskirts of Campodipietra. It adds a named landscape feature to an exploration of the municipality, while the medieval settlement and churches are its cultural focus.

The entrance to the Ex Palazzo Ducale is through the main entrance at Piazza San Martino Vescovo 8. If you plan to include the palace in your itinerary, check the access information again before your visit.
