San Martino In Pensilis combines striking architecture with festival traditions and a distinctive local specialty. The Palazzo Baronale, several churches, and the Villa Rustica di Mattonelle offer different historical perspectives. The Carrese and the feast in honor of Saint Joseph bring regular dates to the town calendar. When planning your stay, you can decide whether architecture, religious heritage, tradition, or local cuisine is your main interest.

Palazzo Baronale and Churches

The Palazzo Baronale, also known as the Castello di San Martino in Pensilis, is one of the town's most important historic monuments. Its origins date back to the Norman period in the 12th century. At the time, the complex served a defensive purpose. Its name, date, and original function give the building a clear place in the town's history: this is a fortified medieval complex, not a building from the later church and festival tradition.

The Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo is the parish church of San Martino in Pensilis. It was built in the 18th century and extensively renovated in 1728 on the occasion of the transfer of the relics of San Leo. Inside, the main altar is adorned with an urn containing these relics. Its construction date, renovation, and the transfer of the relics relate to different aspects of its history: one places the church in time, while the other explains its special connection to San Leo.

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe has a different architectural history. A plaque set into the bell tower attests to the year 1410. The church also has a Baroque façade divided into three sections. Visitors interested in architecture will find concrete features that distinguish its dating from its later stylistic design. The Chiesa di Gesù e Maria adds to this picture as a Franciscan convent dating back to 1490.

Villa Rustica di Mattonelle

The Villa Rustica di Mattonelle also brings together different themes. A wine press is located in the excavated agricultural area of the Roman villa. The archaeological evidence places the press in the part of the complex used for economic activity. By contrast, the area intended for the owners was situated in a scenic location, overlooking the Biferno Valley and the sea. These two details offer insight into different parts of the villa: the excavated agricultural area with its wine press, and the owners' area with its scenic setting.

Festival Dates and the Carrese

The Festa dello Sposalizio di San Giuseppe is celebrated in San Martino in Pensilis every year on March 19. The race and the procession are among the distinctive elements of the Carrese tradition. On the Tratturo dell'antica Transumanza, exhausted oxen and horses are changed after the first four kilometers or more of the race. On May 2, the winning cart has the honor of carrying the silver bust and the priest in the procession.

The two dates mentioned mark different occasions in the calendar: the feast of San Giuseppe is held on March 19, while the procession with the winning cart takes place on May 2. The race itself is also a characteristic part of the Carrese tradition, from changing the animals to the procession.

Pampanella and Local Cuisine

Pampanella is the signature pork dish of San Martino in Pensilis. It is seasoned with garlic and chili pepper. This gives local cuisine a concrete point of reference alongside the town's historical and religious themes. Visitors interested in regional food culture can try this dish without confusing it with the archaeological evidence of the wine press: one is a local food, while the other is a find from the excavated agricultural area of the Villa Rustica.

Getting There from Termoli

From Termoli, take the SS 16 Adriatica from north to south. Continue at the Campomarino exit and go beyond Portocannone. As road conditions can change, check the current route and traffic conditions before setting off. This gives you a specific starting point for your journey, while the architecture, festival traditions, and Pampanella offer different areas of interest for your stay.
