Borgarello offers two different starting points for planning a stay: local and architectural history dating back to the Visconti era, and cycle paths along the Naviglio Pavese. The Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo and the Cascine are also local points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Borgarello, start by asking what you want to focus on during your stay: are you mainly interested in the town’s history, or would you like to combine your trip with a cycling tour?

Local history and the Visconti Park

The historic Cascina La Colombina formed the original town centre, around which the old village developed. During the Visconti era, Cascina Colombina served as an important checkpoint for the park. Borgarello was then part of the Parco Nuovo, a hunting ground between the Castello di Pavia and the Certosa di Pavia. The town’s history thus brings together the village’s development and the wider park landscape.

Cascina Repentita was one of the small rural settlement buildings scattered across the historic Visconti Park. Remains of the ancient Parco Visconteo are still visible at the cascina; the historic building fabric has been damaged. Another trace of the park’s layout is the dividing wall between Parco Vecchio and Parco Nuovo. It ran from Cantone delle Tre Miglia to Due Porte. The settlement buildings, park areas, and wall each offer a different glimpse into the historic landscape.

Cascina Repentita is also linked to a culinary tradition: a local legend connects the origins of Zuppa alla Pavese with the building. This connection is part of local lore and is not a confirmed historical origin.

Church and cultural history

The Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo can be understood both through its documented history and its architectural form. A document dated 23 May 1395 attests to the church’s existence. Its plan is Baroque and single-naved, with a barrel vault, interconnected shallow side chapels, an enclosed transept, and a choir. The date provides a historical point of reference, while the architectural features describe the church’s spatial layout.

Villa Mezzabarba is another cultural point of interest. In 2017, the municipality acquired the villa and subsequently moved its offices there. It also opened the building for cultural initiatives such as exhibitions, conferences, and concerts. This history adds the cultural use of a municipal building to the older connections with the church, Cascine, and park.

Cycle paths and historic routes

Borgarello has its own network of cycle paths along the Alzaia cycle route by the Naviglio Pavese. The Alzaia cycle route runs for 30 km from Milan to the Certosa di Pavia; a further 6 km lead to Pavia’s historic centre. This distinguishes the local cycle paths from a longer route with named destinations and distances. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The present-day rural path, Sentiero campestre dei Mezzani, offers a different perspective. It apparently follows a medieval route that began north of Borgarello and reached Villanova as its first stop. On the Alzaia cycle route, distances and endpoints provide the main points of reference; on the Sentiero, the likely historic route takes centre stage. These offer different ways to plan your time: a cycling tour with stated route sections, or a path whose appeal also lies in its traditional connection to the medieval route.
