Vigevano brings together Renaissance architecture, museums and nature experiences. Piazza Ducale and the Castello Visconteo-Sforzesco represent the city’s architectural history; various collections focus on Leonardo da Vinci, footwear, Vigevano’s economic development and the history of Lomellina. Along the Ticino, the Anello delle Streghe adds a circular route leading to a slowly flowing branch of the river. When planning your visit, you can first consider whether you would like to devote your stay primarily to the architecture, a particular museum or the riverside landscape. The sites offer different points of focus—from a Renaissance square and museum collections to a waterside habitat.

Renaissance Square, Castle and Cathedral

Piazza Ducale is a Renaissance masterpiece, created between 1492 and 1494 at the behest of Ludovico il Moro. It is also the main entrance to the Castello Visconteo-Sforzesco: a staircase beneath the tower leads from the square into the castle courtyard. The square and castle can therefore be experienced as two connected but distinct aspects of Vigevano’s architectural history.

At the Castello, the guided tours offered on Sundays and public holidays also include the interior rooms. If you plan to take one of these tours, check before travelling whether it is running on your chosen date. Vigevano Cathedral offers a different architectural accent. Its Baroque façade curves in an elliptical shape and was designed by Bishop Juan Caramuel y Lobkowitz. Thus, within a compact area, a Renaissance complex stands alongside a façade shaped by a later Baroque style.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

Leonardiana presents the complete works of Leonardo da Vinci in the halls of the Corte di Ludovico il Moro at the Castello di Vigevano. The Museo Internazionale della Calzatura is Italy’s only public museum dedicated to footwear. Those interested in the city’s economic development can find a broad historical overview at the Museo dell’Imprenditoria Vigevanese: it documents this development from the late 15th century through the post-war period using documents, images, objects and video reports.

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Lomellina focuses on the historical development of the Lomellina area. The period covered ranges from prehistory through late antiquity to the Early Middle Ages. The museums therefore differ both in subject matter and in their historical focus: from Leonardo’s complete works and the history of footwear to the development of an entire region over several eras.

Paths and Waterside Landscapes

The Anello delle Streghe circular route begins in Buccella, a district of Vigevano, and follows the embankment of the Ticino River to the Ramo delle Streghe. This branch flows slowly; aquatic plants grow along its banks, which provide shelter for numerous bird, amphibian and reptile species. The route thus connects a specifically named stretch of river with a habitat whose plant and animal life shapes the character of the destination.

Another place associated with water is the Ecomuseo della Roggia Mora at the Mulino di Mora Bassa. The mill dates back to the 15th century and has two large working waterwheels. The family tour “A spasso con Leonardo e Ludovico” also starts there: a guided tour is followed by a workshop for children. If you plan to take this tour, check the dates in advance.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Vigevano can be reached by Trenord train from Milan. Trains run approximately once an hour, and the journey takes about 31 to 35 minutes. As timetables may change, check the connection before travelling. From Vigevano station, Piazza Ducale is approximately 700 metres away, or a ten-minute walk. If the route is relevant to your personal accessibility needs, check it locally. The approximate journey time and directions from the station to the Renaissance square give you two concrete points of reference for planning your trip; you can choose the other places to visit according to their architecture, collection themes or riverside landscape.
