Drugolo – Trails, Hills and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Drugolo
Drugolo combines a hilly landscape with historic buildings and trails for walking or cycling. This offers different ways to plan your trip: you can experience the landscape along a walking trail or explore the buildings and their history. Route information ranges from an approximate walking time to stated cycling distances.
Landscape and Walking Trails
The walking trail from Padenghe Castle to Drugolo passes through wooded areas with tree species typical of the pre-Alpine hills. Along the way are vineyards, olive groves, barley fields and sunflower fields. The changing landscape offers a way to experience the area on foot, rather than seeing it only as a backdrop to historic buildings.
The walking trail is accessible to everyone and presents few difficulties. It follows unpaved paths, paved sections and woodland trails; it takes about two hours, though this may vary depending on conditions. As trail conditions can also change, check them before setting out. The route follows boundary walls along Sentiero 801.
Cycling Routes and Distances
The Lonato–Padenghe–Lonato cycling route is 13 kilometres long and leads to Castello di Drugolo via Via Cuccagna. Via Cuccagna soon becomes an unpaved path. Another designated cycling route, Bedizzole–Lonato–Valtenesi, is 30 kilometres long. These distances give you a concrete basis for distinguishing between the two routes by their planned length; no walking or cycling time is provided.
The “Da Lonato a Montichiari” cycling route passes through a landscape of gentle moraine hills, woods, vineyards and olive groves. Here, too, the landscape and its uses are part of the picture: hills, woodland and agricultural land alternate. The information provided differs between the options described: an approximate duration is given for the walking trail, while distances are provided for the cycling routes.
Castle and Historic Buildings
Castello di Drugolo is known for its exceptional state of preservation. The current owners do not allow visits. The historic village of Drugolo dates back to the 10th century; a Lombard origin is possible. The information about the village and the castle’s state of preservation offers two distinct historical perspectives, without including a visit to the castle.
The former Capuchin monastery is in the village of Drugolo, within the municipality of Lonato and on the border with Bedizzole. It is near the Castello di Drugolo of the same name, on a hill overlooking Lake Garda. A walk through the hills of Drugolo leads to the former property of the Capuchin monastery. This makes it possible to consider trails through the landscape and the monastery’s history as separate, yet both place-related, topics.
The Chiesetta dei Morti della Selva stands north of Drugolo. Work carried out in the 18th century gave it its current appearance; in 2013, it was reconsecrated as an Orthodox monastery. This sequence distinguishes the building’s history from its later consecration: its current appearance dates from the 18th-century work, while the consecration has its own date. Together with the history of the village and the monastery, this offers a view of different periods without assigning all the buildings to the same era.
When planning your stay, you can compare the walking trail’s approximate two-hour duration with the designated cycling routes of 13 and 30 kilometres. The information relates to different ways of planning: an approximate duration for the walk and distances for the cycling routes.
