Discover Adro: Churches, History and Trails
Accommodation in Adro
Adro lies at the foot of Monte Alto and includes the hamlet of Torbiato. Churches, historic traces and nearby trails offer a stay with a variety of cultural and landscape highlights. The town’s history brings together sacred buildings from different centuries, remains of medieval fortifications and evidence of a once-important textile industry.
Churches from Several Centuries
Santa Maria in Favento is the oldest surviving sacred building in Adro and was built at least as early as the 13th century. Its interior includes painted panels or frescoes added between the early 14th century and the mid-16th century. The church thus combines a long building history with furnishings added over several centuries.
Santa Maria Assunta in Castello reflects a different period of development. From 1505, the church was rebuilt on the site of the remaining medieval castle complex. It served as Adro’s parish church until it was replaced by the new parish church of San Giovanni Battista in the 17th century. Its interior, consecrated in 1522, has a single-nave layout, a wooden-beam ceiling and decorated terracotta tiles. This building brings together the history of the former parish seat and specific features of its interior.
San Giovanni Battista stands in the town centre. The new parish church dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and is adorned with rich Baroque stucco and decoration. Its artworks include works by Fantoni da Rovetta. In contrast to Santa Maria Assunta in Castello, this church highlights the later parish church and its Baroque design.
Pilgrimage and Historic Traces
The pilgrimage church of Madonna della Neve is associated with an apparition of the Virgin Mary said to have taken place in Adro, at Oneto, on 8 July 1519. Beneath the presbytery is a crypt reached by three staircases: two at the sides and a wider one in the middle. The specific arrangement of the entrances is one of the sanctuary’s distinctive architectural features.
A religious festival is held there every year on 5 August. It includes Masses, processions and religious rites, as well as a traditional fair with stalls selling local products. If you plan to visit for the festival, check that year’s programme in advance.
The medieval fortifications are also part of the townscape: ruins dating from the 14th century survive from the historic settlement. These include the Ghibelline Tower, the town’s landmark. The entrance gate is the only fully preserved remnant of Adro’s old castle. Santa Maria Assunta in Castello was rebuilt on the site of the remaining castle complex; the church and the remains of the fortifications therefore point to different chapters in the same local history.
Palace and Textile History
Several building projects in the 17th and 18th centuries gave Palazzo Bargnani-Dandolo its eclectic appearance. The first project is thought to date from 1670 to 1680. On 31 January 1904, Ermellina Maselli di Figino, the widow of Count Tullio Dandolo, donated the palace to the municipality of Adro. Its development as a building and its later donation mark two clearly distinct stages in its history.
Historically, Adro was a centre of textile production, with numerous spinning mills operating until the early 20th century. This past adds an economic dimension to the town’s religious and architectural history without requiring a visit to any particular site.
Plan Your Trails, Wine Visits and Journey
The third stage of the long-distance La Via delle Sorelle hiking trail passes through Adro. Nearby, Monte Alto also has an easy circular trail of about seven kilometres, with views over Franciacorta and Lake Iseo. The route through the town and the circular trail differ in their format: one is a section of a long-distance trail passing through Adro, while the other is a loop around Monte Alto.
Adro has numerous wineries that offer visits and tastings. Together with the churches and historic buildings, these provide another way to shape your stay around a particular theme. ARRIVA serves Adro on bus route LS025 between Brescia and Paratico; the stop is on Via Provinciale. Timetables may change, so check the latest connections before travelling.
