Ponte San Pietro: Church Art and Nature
Accommodation in Ponte San Pietro
Ponte San Pietro combines church art with a history of nature that can be read in the Isolotto. If you are considering a hotel stay in town, the churches’ different construction periods and furnishings, as well as the history of the landscape, offer clear thematic guidance. Train and bus connections are another practical part of planning your journey.
Church Art from Different Periods
At the Chiesa “Vecchia Sussidiaria” S. Pietro e Paolo, Baroque architectural and artistic history come together. The church was rebuilt from the ground up in Baroque forms, replacing an older building. Three paintings by Giovanni Carobbio dating from 1738 have been preserved in its choir, including “Caduta di Simon Mago.” Nine statues, created by Antonio Maria Pirovano in 1745 and 1748, stand in the scenographically designed forecourt. They are regarded as his most famous work and as the most important sculptural testimony to the Bergamasque Baroque. The paintings in the choir and the sculptures in the forecourt thus represent two distinct aspects of the church’s furnishings.
The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo was consecrated on 28 April 1934 by Adriano Bernareggi, Auxiliary Bishop of Bergamo; on that occasion, the older dedication to Saints Peter and Paul was transferred. Its architecture is characterised by Neo-Gothic forms. Stone from Bagnatica was used in its construction, and Ghiandone granite for the columns. Its architectural style, materials and consecration offer different points of reference for understanding the church’s history.
The Chiesa di San Marco was originally built in the 14th century as a small chapel in fields where victims of major plague epidemics were buried. A fresco depicting the Crucifixion is located above the entrance. The church is a short distance from the banks of the Brembo River. In Locate Bergamasco stands the Chiesa Locate S. Antonino Martire, which was also built in the 14th century. It was enlarged and consecrated in the second half of the 19th century. It was dedicated to Saint Antoninus Martyr; relics of Saints Alexander of Bergamo and Vincent were sealed in the mensa of the main altar. While San Marco began as a small chapel, the history of Locate combines a medieval beginning with an expansion in the 19th century.
The Isolotto and the River Landscape
The Isolotto is Ponte San Pietro’s last natural area. It was once a large alluvial river island; its rural surroundings are part of the town’s historical heritage. Rare orchids bloom there, about 100 metres from the historic town centre. Habitat conditions change with the seasons, a relevant consideration for planning that contrasts with the churches’ enduring architectural history.
The new Ponte–Curno–Treviolo path is intended as sustainable infrastructure to rediscover the Isolotto and enhance the lower reaches of the Brembo. Check the path conditions locally. The Chiesa di San Marco is also close to the riverbank, so the river landscape is part of the setting of a church as well, while the Isolotto is shaped by its former identity as a river island and its seasonally changing habitat conditions.
Getting There and Planning Your Visit
Ponte San Pietro railway station is served by the Milano Porta Garibaldi–Bergamo and Lecco–Bergamo rail lines. ATB bus line 8 connects Bergamo with Ponte San Pietro. Check current timetables before travelling, as schedules and routes may change. This allows you to factor in travel by train or bus as a separate part of your plans, without relying on specific departure times.
Artchivio Smaltoteca ETS organises private tours of its museum; arrange a visit in advance. It also offers training, demonstrations, exhibitions, conferences, events and publications. The private tours are therefore a different format from the association’s other activities.
At the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, there is a car park next to the bell tower with a ramp accessible to people with disabilities. Check the conditions before your visit. There are parking spaces opposite the Chiesa Locate S. Antonino Martire; both entrances are at ground level. It is also advisable to confirm these local details in advance.
