Lovere on Lake Iseo: Art, History and Nature
Accommodation in Lovere
Lovere lies on the western shore of Lake Iseo. For a stay, the town brings together art and architectural history, religious sites, natural history collections and routes into the surrounding landscape. Its attractions range from medieval fortifications and the art collection at the Accademia Tadini to a nature trail on Monte Cala. A boat trip on the northern Sebino offers another perspective. If you are looking for a hotel in Lovere, these different highlights can help you decide which experiences you would like to shape your stay.
Townscape, Towers and Art
Between the 12th and 13th centuries, Lovere was fortified with a wall enclosing the town and a castle; tower houses were built around the main square. The Torre Soca, in the “beccarie” district, dates from the 13th to 14th centuries. The approximately 28-metre-high Torre Civica bears several frescoes recalling the various rulers who governed Lovere. One fresco shows a lion, the symbol of Venetian rule, accompanied by the year 1442. The dates therefore span the 12th- and 13th-century fortifications, the Torre Soca and a dated fresco.
The Accademia Tadini offers a different perspective on art history. It is a valuable art collection and a testament to Italian Neoclassicism. Its halls, which face Lake Iseo, display masterpieces by Antonio Canova and Francesco Hayez. Lovere’s historic architecture and a collection with a clear connection to Neoclassicism thus come together with different aspects of the town’s history.
Natural History and Religious Heritage
The Museo Civico di Scienze Naturali “Alessio Amighetti” has sections devoted to mineralogy, palaeontology, ornithology and mammals, malacology, entomology, mycology and botany. Its ornithology section displays 221 specimens from the local lake and mountain area. The collection therefore ranges from rocks and fossils to botany and zoology; the origins of the bird specimens give part of the collection a direct connection to the landscape.
Religious sites also shape Lovere’s history. The Chiesa di San Giorgio stands above the medieval Borgo on the road to Valle and is one of the town’s oldest religious buildings. The Santuario di Lovere is dedicated to Christ, King of Virgins, and is associated with the beginning of Bartolomea Capitanio and Vincenza Gerosa’s life and spiritual journey in Lovere. The side apses of the Santuario delle Sante loveresi house the relics of Bartolomea Capitanio and Vincenza Gerosa, which are venerated there. This sanctuary was consecrated on 1 October 1938 and dedicated to Christ, King of Virgins, in honour of its founders.
Trails and Exploring the Lake
The Anello naturalistico del Monte Cala reaches the summit of Monte Cala at an altitude of 620 metres. To access the trail, leave your car in the free car park on Via Gerone, then continue on foot along Via del Castelliere. Check these access details locally before setting out. Another named route is Lovere–S. Giovanni–Bossico–Ceratello–Lovere. It starts and ends at Piazzale Bonomelli in Lovere. There are different details to help with planning: the Anello specifies the access point and summit, while the other route lists the places along the way and the same start and end point.
The Infopoint Alto Lago d'Iseo distributes panoramic maps of trails and excursions for exploring the natural heritage of Alto Sebino and Lake Iseo. Its geographical scope therefore covers both individual trails and the wider landscape around the lake.
The Tour dell'Alto Lago departs from Pisogne, Costa Volpino or Lovere. An onboard audio guide accompanies the exploration of the northern Sebino in Italian and English. Lovere is one of the possible departure points, alongside two others. If you plan to take the trip, check departure times in advance.
For groups and parties, visits to the Basilica di Santa Maria in Valvendra outside public opening hours can be arranged by request through the Infopoint Alto Lago d'Iseo at least two days in advance. Check with the Infopoint beforehand whether this arrangement applies to your intended visit date.
