Oneta: Sanctuary, Churches and Mining History
Accommodation in Oneta
Oneta offers visitors a range of points of interest for those interested not only in the landscape but also in architectural history, sacred art or historic mining techniques. The Santuario della Madonna del Frassino, churches in Oneta, Plazza and Chignolo, the Foghera Mine and two trails with different themes each offer a distinct focus. This lets you decide whether to focus your plans primarily on church art, mining history, or nature and geology.
The sanctuary above the Valle del Riso
The Santuario della Madonna del Frassino is located in Oneta, in the upper Valle del Riso, in the hamlet of Frassino. At an elevation of 954 metres, it stands on a hill at the foot of Monte Alben. The large, panoramic churchyard offers views over the Valle del Riso. Its setting may also appeal to visitors who want to take in the surrounding mountain landscape as well as its history.
The sanctuary was built at the site of a Marian apparition in 1512 and completed in 1520. The two dates refer to different events: 1512 marks the apparition, while 1520 marks the completion of the building. Guided tours of the sanctuary can be arranged on request.
Church art and local history
The original construction of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Oneta is dated to 1015. The church is in the village centre and can be reached on foot from anywhere in the village. It has a single altar dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Two slender sandstone columns from the 15th century stand in the porch. The portal also dates from this period; its lunette features a fresco of the Pietà.
Other religious sites can be found in Plazza and Chignolo. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Plazza was built in 1704. The Church of San Bartolomeo in Chignolo is documented as dating from 1575 and is affiliated with the parish church of Oneta. These sites add further aspects of religious history to the architectural details of Santa Maria Assunta.
The Museo etnografico di Oneta is housed in a historic building in the hamlet of Villa. Together with the churches and sanctuary, it offers another way to explore the cultural sites you might visit during a stay in Oneta.
Foghera Mine: mining history and getting your bearings
The Foghera Mine preserves evidence of historic mining techniques that are no longer used today. It has been restored and reopened for tourism. The mine is located at an altitude of around 900 metres above sea level, above Oneta and near the hamlet of Plazza. An access road suitable for coaches leads to the mine.
The car park for the mine is about 200 metres away; toilets and a refreshment point are available there. Check before travelling whether these facilities are open. The elevation and car park details help you find your way, while the preserved evidence highlights the site's focus on historic mineral extraction.
Trails with different themes
The Valle Giulia–Monte Grem trail is about 1,500 metres long and runs between elevations of 760 and 1,050 metres. It leads to the pastures of Monte Grem. Its themes include natural history, geology, history and religion. The trail length and elevation range provide a concrete basis for planning; its subject matter also goes beyond nature and landscape.
Signs along CAI Trail 239 provide information about the mine, the pond ecosystem, the forest and the alpine pasture. The car park for this trail is in Plazza di Oneta, at an elevation of 923 metres above sea level. When choosing a trail based on its focus, you can compare these details directly: the Valle Giulia–Monte Grem trail is described in terms of length, elevation range and themes, while the signs along CAI Trail 239 provide its main source of information.
During your stay, you can choose between sacred architecture, mining history, and trails featuring nature, geology or history. Each site offers a different way to discover Oneta according to your interests.
