Calusco d’Adda: History, Churches and the Adda Landscape
Accommodation in Calusco D'adda
Calusco d’Adda is suited to travelers who want to combine their stay with local history, sacred architecture and walking routes. Its historical references range from medieval mentions to buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries. Other highlights include the viewpoint near Verghi, woodland paths and a virtual glimpse inside the Semenza hydroelectric power plant.
Historic Sites and Churches
Calusco Castle is documented as far back as 1127. A tower from the former castle still stands near the public gardens. San Fedele also has a long history: the former church is documented as far back as 1125 and preserves the base of its medieval bell tower. The new church of San Fedele was consecrated on December 7, 1886. This makes it possible to distinguish between two different construction periods, rather than conflating the older church with the later building.
The monastery in Baccanello contains traces of the Middle Ages. Construction of the Franciscan monastery began in 1605 and was completed in 1609. Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, who later became Pope John XXIII, was associated with the monastery. Also in Baccanello, the church of Santa Maria Assunta is documented as far back as the 16th century. In Vanzone, the church of Santa Maria Bambina is mentioned from around 1260; it was formerly called San Giuliano. These different dates provide context if you do not want to reduce the local history to a single building.
Verghi, too, has several historical connections. The church of San Michele di Verghi was founded near the Adda River more than a thousand years ago. The site retains the foundations of a small apse church measuring approximately 12.5 × 8 meters, as well as traces of monastery walls. The Chapel of the Plague Dead of Verghi was built in 1836. The Chiesa dei Morti di Vergo contains frescoes of Saint Roch and Saint Fedele.
The Adda, Walking Routes and Landscape
Verghi is situated on a natural terrace overlooking the Adda River and facing the Poiret weir. A path leads through the woods to a large green area equipped for breaks, below the Ponte San Michele. The view and trail conditions may affect your plans; check the current situation before your visit.
A route description from June 2019 follows the Sentiero Segré from Calusco toward Villa d’Adda. It also mentions a side path off the steep route to Verghi, leading to rock faces in the valley equipped for sport climbing. If you plan to hike these trails or climb, bear in mind that trail conditions can change, and check access and climbing equipment locally.
The Ponte San Michele connects Paderno and Calusco across the Adda River and carries rail and road traffic. The railway station is also part of the area’s transport history: it opened on July 1, 1889, on the Bergamo–Seregno railway line. These historical details add another perspective on Calusco d’Adda alongside its churches and walking routes.
Hydroelectric Power and Activities
The Semenza hydroelectric power plant is located in Calusco d’Adda on the left bank of the Adda River, near the Robbiate weir. It was inaugurated in 1920, and its building is clad in Ceppo d’Adda stone. Edison offers a virtual tour of the plant using Google Street View in a 360-degree view. This provides a digital look inside the building alongside the area’s historical sites.
The municipality’s profile for the Canoa Kayak Club Calusco d’Adda, updated in April 2026, lists trekking and cycling excursions among its tourism and sports activities. It also mentions trips on the Adda by boat, canoe and kayak. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, confirm arrangements with the club in advance; they may change.
