In Montoggio, landscapes and trails, cultural history, and a local pastry tradition offer distinct travel themes. The Anello del Lago Val Noci trail, historic sites, and paths between small settlements provide specific points of interest.

Trails and landscapes around Lago Val Noci

The Anello del Lago Val Noci trail loops around the lake. Along the way, the trail offers views of the industrial ruins of lime kilns dating from the early 20th century, as well as insights into the area’s history and its ecological and natural features. This circular route thus connects the remains of the former lime kilns with the surrounding landscape.

The many small settlements in the municipality of Montoggio are also connected by paths. These wind through meadows and centuries-old forests. So, in addition to the route around the lake, there are paths connecting settlements and landscapes. Conditions on the trail can change; check them before setting out.

At 1,035 metres, Monte Bano is part of the natural mountain backdrop of Lago Val Noci and a destination for excursions. Monte Bano is an excursion destination in this mountain setting; the Anello del Lago Val Noci loops around the lake, while paths through meadows and forests connect small settlements.

Sanctuary, museum and local memory

The Santuario di Santa Maria delle Tre Fontane was built in the second half of the 12th century. Its date of origin provides a specific historical reference point for Montoggio’s cultural history. Another perspective is offered by the Museo degli Ex Voto in Tre Fontane and its religious and rural-themed collection.

The museum displays silver votive offerings donated by worshippers in gratitude for graces received, as well as numerous folk paintings inspired by rural life. The votive offerings and paintings highlight different themes: religious expressions of thanks sit alongside depictions whose subjects come from rural life. Check the museum’s current visiting arrangements in advance.

A monument in a small district honours Balilla. Nearby is a ruin believed to be the remains of his birthplace. This attribution is therefore a traditional belief. The ruins of the Castello dei Fieschi di Montoggio lie at the top of the hill. The monument and castle ruins add further sites of local heritage to the sanctuary and museum. Check access to the monument site locally.

Canestrello di Montoggio

Canestrello di Montoggio is another specific theme to explore during a stay. The pastry is traditionally made with chestnut flour and honey, which replace wheat flour and sugar, respectively. A ministerial decree in 1999 included it in Italy’s national list of traditional agri-food products. The recipe and its inclusion on the list show two sides of the same local tradition: a distinctive choice of ingredients and recognition as a traditional product.

These offer different ways to plan your trip: excursions by the lake and in the mountains, trails through the landscape, historic sites, or the culinary tradition of Canestrello.
