Cogorno in Liguria is shaped by terraced hills, historic churches and the Borgo dei Fieschi. San Salvatore, with its Basilica dei Fieschi, is a practical starting point for a cultural stay. When choosing a hotel, compare its actual location in relation to the local area, trails on Monte San Giacomo and access by road or rail.

The Fieschi complex in San Salvatore

The Basilica dei Fieschi is one of Liguria’s important, well-preserved Romanesque-Gothic buildings. The basilica and the adjacent Borgo dei Fieschi were recognised as a national monument in 1860. In the Centro culturale “Museo dei Fieschi,” restored stables belonging to the Palazzo Comitale serve as exhibition spaces. The “Pietre del Borgo” occupy most of the space; temporary exhibitions mainly explore the family’s history. Check museum opening hours and access to the basilica before planning a fixed sightseeing day. The Baroque church of San Salvatore il Vecchio, now deconsecrated, is used as a multifunctional space together with the rectory and houses an organ dating from 1678.

Hills, terraces and other churches

Beyond Cogorno, the land rises towards Monte San Giacomo. Ligurian terraces with dry-stone walls are part of a long tradition of olive growing. Trails and roads offer panoramic views and access to religious buildings. The Via della Pietra Nera is an ecomuseum trail in five stages exploring the history of Ligurian slate; two of its hiking routes lead to Monte San Giacomo near San Salvatore. Check the distance, elevation gain and return route for your chosen stage. The Chiesa di S. Antonino di Breccanecca, probably dating from the 13th century, houses a 16th-century oil triptych by Giovanni Cambiaso. The Chiesa di S. Maria Monticelli also reflects the area’s history, with its reconstruction in 1374 and expansion in 1730.

Getting there and accommodation

The Lavagna exit on the A12 motorway is 500 metres from San Salvatore. By train, travel via Chiavari and take a connecting bus. Check current services and the final leg to the hotel itself. Accommodation in Cogorno is not necessarily close to the Fieschi complex or the start of a hiking trail. Room options, prices and availability depend on the individual offer; a “best price guarantee” cannot be promised for the area as a whole.
