Cogoleto offers several distinct travel experiences: coastal paths and small beaches, hiking trails, a botanical garden, and traces of local everyday life and art. If you are looking for a hotel in Cogoleto, it helps to decide in advance what you would like to focus on during your stay. The differences between a flat paved route by the sea, paths through the hills and cultural-history sites offer a practical guide.

Exploring the Seaside

The Cogoleto–Varazze route is 4.1 kilometres long, flat and paved, and can be used year-round. It follows the restored trackbed of a former single-track railway line, where trains ran until 1970. Illuminated tunnels and rocky stretches with Mediterranean maquis dominated by Aleppo pines are part of the route.

Along the route, several paths and stairways provide access to the sea; small beaches lie between the cliffs. Public and/or equipped beaches, as well as bathing establishments, are suitable for activities including snorkelling. Some bathing establishments in Cogoleto are accessible to people with disabilities. The Lungomare Europa follows the coast, linking rocky coves with the geological and geomorphological features of the Beigua Geopark.

Hiking Trails, Garden and Hills

The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri offers a different kind of route: Stage No. 20 passes through the municipality. The hilly districts of Sciarborasca and Lerca are starting points for reaching the Alta Via. A footpath also leads from the Tipica Casa Contadina Ligure to the summit of Monte Beigua, at an elevation of 1,287 metres. When planning, you can distinguish the named coastal route with its specified length from the stage or a footpath with a different destination.

The Villa Beuca Botanical Garden covers 34,000 square metres on a coastal terrace 100 metres above sea level, overlooking the sea. Alongside Mediterranean and local plants, it is also home to endangered species. An educational trail with explanatory panels complements the garden. Two ponds illustrate local natural wetlands; many waterbirds have settled there and established nesting sites over the years.

Art, Rural Life and Tradition

The Oratorio di San Lorenzo houses a painting of the martyrdom of the saint attributed to the painter Giovanni Battista Carlone (1603–1684). It also contains several works by Gino Grimaldi (1889–1941). The Casa Contadina di Sciarborasca is located in an original farmhouse that was restored and inaugurated in 1998. The objects on display document rural life and work.

The interiors of the Tipica Casa Contadina Ligure are arranged by theme: one kitchen displays tools used to process milk and make pasta and coffee; the bedroom features hand-embroidered linen. Other rooms are dedicated to spinning and sewing, as well as tools for outdoor work, in the attic. Fornace Bianchi is designated as the “Area di Archeologia Industriale Tiziano Mannoni.” These different sites offer insight into art, everyday history and industrial archaeology, though they do not all cover the same subject.

On 10 August, the traditional “Processione dei Cristi” procession takes place in honour of Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of Cogoleto. If you would like to include this date in your travel plans, check the event date before booking. The Cogoleto railway station is also a local landmark, with a total of four tracks for passenger services.
