Velletri occupies a scenic position on the southern edge of the Colli Albani. When choosing a hotel in Velletri, your interests can help guide your decision: archaeological collections, church art, historic buildings, and local wine and food culture each offer a different perspective. Plan your visit according to whether you are particularly interested in the area's history, art and architecture, or regional traditions.

Museums: Archaeology and Engaging Interpretation

The Museo Civico Archeologico preserves the area's oldest and most valuable historical and archaeological evidence. Highlights of the collection include the Sarcophagus of the Labors of Hercules, also known as the Sarcophagus of Velletri. The Museo Archeologico di Velletri is wheelchair accessible on the ground floor and mezzanine, where architectural barriers have been removed. A child-friendly tour presents its contents through illustrations, games, and questions that encourage attention and curiosity.

The Museo Geopaleontologico di Velletri is spread across two floors and five sections, covering an area of about 500 square meters. Its tactile displays are designed to enable blind visitors to explore the origins of the area, too. A walk-through cave reconstruction brings to life the environment and way of life of humans in the Paleolithic period. Younger visitors can follow the Itinerario Bimbi: the illustrated tour is designed at children's eye level and presents the content in simple, entertaining language.

The educational activities of the Musei Civici di Velletri include guided tours, workshops, excursions, and special projects for children, families, and students of all school levels. As individual programs may change, check what is available for your visit date before you go.

Churches, Architectural History, and Art

On Piazza Cairoli, the church of Santa Maria del Trivio is flanked by a 50-meter-high tower in the Lombard Gothic style. The first construction of the Cathedral of San Clemente dates back to the 4th century; it was built on the site of an ancient Roman temple to Mars. Its apse is decorated with recently restored 14th-century frescoes. Of the gates in the historic city walls, Porta Napoletana is the only one that remains.

The Casa delle Culture e della Musica is housed in the former 17th-century Convento del Carmine, whose old monastic rooms are now brought to life by cultural events. These include an auditorium in the former medieval church of Sant’Antonino, dating from the 11th century, as well as a cloister and refectory with restored frescoes and lunettes. The Museo Diocesano opened its current exhibition space in 2000 in the cloister of the Cathedral of San Clemente. Its collection is dedicated to sacred art and includes paintings, liturgical vestments, goldsmiths' work, and religious objects.

Another perspective on Velletri's past awaits at the Casa Museo Ugo Tognazzi: from the early 1960s until 1990, the property was the actor's home, where he lived with his family. The Orto del Pellegrino adds a smaller, green touch, with beds of medicinal and aromatic herbs.

Wine and Regional Traditions

Velletri is a historic and highly regarded wine-producing center with a wide variety of grape varieties. Local cuisine also has its own distinctive tradition: Carciofo alla Matticella is made by cooking a Roman artichoke over vine branches using an old technique, then seasoning it with extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and mint.

The traditional events calendar features the Festa dell’Uva e del Vino in September. Events celebrating Carciofo alla Matticella are also held in April. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the dates and program in advance. This will help you take your interests in art, history, and regional traditions into account when planning your stay.
