Canterano: Hiking Trails, Nature and Festivals
Accommodation in Canterano
Canterano stands on a hill in the Monti Ruffi. The village offers a clear connection to the landscape when choosing where to stay: Canterano is a starting point for hikes and mountain bike tours on the trails of the Monti Ruffi. The Cammino di San Benedetto also passes through Canterano. For planning your trip, the trails of the Monti Ruffi and the route of the Cammino offer distinct outdoor options.
Hiking and Nature in the Monti Ruffi
The Cascatelle del Peschio lie just below Canterano in the Valle delle Canapine valley. There, small rapids and waterfalls create a natural attraction amid dense chestnut forests. La Retommella offers something different: this small pond in the Monti Ruffi provides a suitable habitat for frogs, small fish and butterflies.
La Retommella also has special significance for hikers. A network of trails connects the pond with all the villages of the Monti Ruffi, and it also offers an opportunity for a relaxing break. The natural sites appeal to different interests: water and chestnut forest take centre stage at the Cascatelle, while La Retommella is known for its pond and habitat. The hiking trails of the Monti Ruffi and the Cammino di San Benedetto, which passes through Canterano, complement these landscape features with specific routes.
Culture and History
The Mura Pelasgiche di Canterano are considered the oldest remains of polygonal walls among the villages of the Val d’Aniene. Other evidence of Canterano’s ancient origins includes two Neolithic axes, seven bronze axes discovered in a hoard and kept at the Museo Pigorini in Rome, remains of polygonal walls, and Roman funerary inscriptions. The archaeological traces mentioned here therefore span the period from Neolithic finds to Roman inscriptions.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta was built on solid rock in the 17th century. It offers a different perspective on Canterano’s history from the Neolithic and Roman finds. The Monumento ai caduti, in turn, is a place of remembrance: here, the community honours the sacrifice of its citizens. Archaeological traces, a 17th-century building and communal remembrance thus offer distinct cultural themes for a stay.
Festivals in Canterano
During the Festa della Madonna SS. degli Angeli, a procession travels almost two kilometres from the parish church to the sanctuary at the old cemetery. Eight members of the brotherhood carry the processional float, and hundreds of people take part each year. The festival is considered a century-old tradition. Its processional route, bearers and annual attendance give the event a distinctive community character.
The Festa Patrono S. Mauro Abate is Canterano’s patron saint festival. The Sagra del Tartufo celebrates the truffle of Canterano; the festival takes place in October and has been celebrated for more than ten years. The events therefore have different focuses: a patron saint festival, a procession and a truffle festival. If a festival is a deciding factor in your trip, check the exact event dates before booking.
