Discover Castel Gandolfo
Accommodation in Castel Gandolfo
Castel Gandolfo offers a range of ways to shape your stay: papal and ecclesiastical architectural history, art, archaeological remains and Lake Albano. For your travel planning, it is worth considering these themes separately. The historic sites tell stories of different eras; the lake has beaches, facilities and routes, each with its own focus.
Palace, church and collections
The Palazzo Pontificio was built between 1624 and 1626 on the site of the Savelli castle. Construction of the Pontifical Collegiate Church of San Tommaso da Villanova began in 1658, commissioned by Pope Alessandro VII Chigi and based on a design by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Its furnishings include paintings by Borgognone and Pietro da Cortona, as well as stucco work by Antonio Raggi.
The Galleria dei Ritratti dei Pontefici was established in the Apostolic Palace in 2015. Its exhibition presents the history of the papacy over the past five centuries, from Julius II della Rovere to Pope Francis. Another collection can be found in the Antiquarium of Villa Barberini: seven rooms display works of remarkable quality, mainly from the imperial villa, its theatre and the Ninfeo Bergantino, also known as the Ninfeo di Diana.
Outdoor art and Bronze Age remains
The open-air street-art gallery in Castel Gandolfo offers a different perspective. Stretching over 800 metres, it features murals by national and international artists. This places public art alongside the collections and older architectural history, without requiring you to expect the same kind of cultural venue.
On the shore of Lake Albano lies the Bronze Age settlement of Villaggio delle Macine. Dating from the 17th to the 15th century BC, it preserves the remains of one of the world’s rare examples of a pile-dwelling settlement. You can also see and use a “daughter” of the world’s first postbox in Piazza della Libertà .
Lake Albano and different routes
Along the Lungolago di Castel Gandolfo, there are both free public beaches and beaches operated under concession. Facilities also include a children’s playground, restaurants, bars and a church. As facilities may change, check the latest information when making specific plans.
The CAI-510 circles Lake Albano for about ten kilometres. The route runs partly along paved roads and partly along a woodland path; local conditions may change. The ancient Via Francigena has a different route description: it passes through the village and the Castel Gandolfo area. The distinction is clear: the CAI-510 is described as a circuit of the lake, with an approximate length and varied surfaces, while the Via Francigena is defined by its route through the village and area.
Vatican Observatory
The Vatican Observatory has historic telescopes in the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo. The Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo contain historic domes and a visitor centre. The historic sites are accessible through the Vatican Museums. As ticketing and access arrangements may change, check the latest information before planning your visit.
This gives you a range of destinations to choose from, spanning architectural and art history, archaeological remains, the lakeshore and its routes. When planning your visits, take the different route descriptions into account and check the latest access arrangements for the Observatory’s historic sites.
