Spinaceto offers several clearly distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: ancient sites, architecture, theatre history, football and the birdlife in the surrounding area. If you’re looking for a hotel in Spinaceto, you can start by considering which of these interests matters most for your stay. The Villa di Tor de’ Cenci represents archaeological history, the ISES complex is notable for its distinctive arrangement of buildings, and the Teatro della Dodicesima tells the story of neighbourhood theatre.

Ancient history: villa, grape-pressing basin and watchtower

The Villa di Tor de’ Cenci is a significant example of an ancient suburban residence. The complex, covering about 2,400 m², was in use from the late Republican period in the 1st century BC until the end of the imperial period in the 5th century AD. The original building phase included an underground masonry basin for pressing grapes, known as a calcatorium. Its use as a grape-pressing basin helps explain a specific part of the original complex.

Alongside the villa on Via Padre Romualdo Formato, visible remains of a polygonal lava-stone pavement have survived. This pavement formed part of a branch road leading to the ancient Via Laurentina. The visible stones therefore offer an archaeological point of interest in their own right, alongside the underground calcatorium.

Another historic landmark is Torre Brunori: in Spinaceto, near the Palazzo Enasarco complex, stands an ancient watchtower bearing this name. The tower and the villa represent different types of historic building. If you’re interested in the area’s past, you’ll find both an ancient residence with preserved architectural details and a named watchtower here.

Architecture and theatre history

The ISES complex in Spinaceto was designed by Barucci, Anversa and Dall’Olio. It consists of five symmetrically arranged, slatted buildings. The number of buildings, their layout and their slatted form are concrete features that help identify the complex as an architectural ensemble. In contrast to the single watchtower, the focus here is on a group of buildings and their symmetrical design.

The history of local institutions is another of the neighbourhood’s distinct themes. The parish of San Giovanni Evangelista was established in 1969 in the Spinaceto district of Rome. The Teatro della Dodicesima opened in 2005 as the first and, to date, only neighbourhood theatre. Archaeological and architectural landmarks thus complement the history of neighbourhood theatre, without requiring any particular reason for your trip.

Birdlife, football and getting around

In the Meandro di Spinaceto, in the area around Spinaceto, birdlife is the main attraction. For travellers interested in birds, this is a clear point of interest in the surrounding area, distinct from the neighbourhood’s architectural and theatre history.

The Spinaceto 70 sports centre has two eight-a-side football pitches and two five-a-side pitches. These two formats are listed separately, giving you a clear idea of the types of pitches available. If football is part of your travel plans, check the centre’s current status in advance, as sports facilities may change.

For getting around the area near the Teatro della Dodicesima, the Spinaceto/Avolio bus stop is also useful: it is just a few metres from the theatre. It is served by route 708 from EUR Palasport and routes 705 and 706 from EUR Fermi. Check the current timetable before travelling, as transport details may change.
